First Impression

I downloaded Viber about 13 months ago because my team at work switched to it for project coordination. I remember it was a Tuesday morning, my Galaxy S23 had just finished charging, and I was already annoyed at having to install yet another app. But I have to admit, the setup was fast. The group chats handle up to 250 people, which is perfect for my extended family’s chaotic holiday planning. And the stickers? My niece loves sending the animated ones. Not really my thing, but they work without crashing the app.

Where It Falls Short

Okay, here’s my honest gripe. The app can be a bit pushy with features I don’t want. Like, I don’t need a “Viber Assistant” popping up suggesting I play games or buy sticker packs. I’m a busy guy — I don’t have time to swipe away notifications about some hidden object game. Also, the self-destruct timer for messages is buried in the settings. I had to Google how to find it. That’s a waste of my time. And sometimes, the app randomly logs out on my Galaxy S23. It happened twice in the last month. I had to re-verify my number, which took five minutes each time. Not a huge deal, but annoying when I’m in a hurry.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free. So, yes. I’ve never paid a cent for the core features — messaging, calls, group chats. I’ve bought a few sticker packs for my niece’s birthday, but that was my choice. For what it does, it’s absolutely worth the zero dollars. If you’re someone who hates spending on apps, this is a no-brainer. I’d rather they just show a tiny ad now and then than push games in my face. But honestly, I’d still use it even if they charged a few bucks a year. The call quality alone saves me money on international calling cards.

Developer & Support

I haven’t contacted support myself because the app just works for me. But I did scan the app store reviews when I was setting it up, and I saw a mix. Some people complain about slow responses, others say chat support helped within a day. My guess is they’re okay, not great. The app updates come regularly, which is a good sign — the developers are actually fixing bugs. For example, that random logout issue I mentioned? I noticed a patch two weeks ago, and it hasn’t happened since. So they’re listening, even if they’re not perfect.

Privacy & Safety

This is the main reason I stick with Viber. End-to-end encryption isn’t just a marketing buzzword here. I’ve tested it — my friend works in IT, and he tried to intercept a call once (with my permission, obviously). Couldn’t do it. The disappearing messages feature is also legit, though it took me way too long to find. I wish they’d make it more obvious. Also, the app doesn’t ask for unnecessary permissions. It didn’t try to read my contacts twice or access my camera without reason. That matters to me because I’m sick of apps that harvest data like it’s their job. Viber feels like one of the few that actually means it when they say “privacy first.”
