First Impression

A coworker of mine, Sarah, mentioned she uses imo to keep in touch with her sister in the Philippines. I had a project deadline crunch and needed to call a client in Vietnam three times a week, so I figured I’d give it a shot. Downloading and setting up on my Samsung Galaxy S23 took maybe two minutes. Punch in your phone number, get a code, done. The interface is pretty basic — looks like something from 2015, not gonna lie. But I don’t care about fancy animations. I care about getting through to someone on the other side of the planet without my call dropping every thirty seconds. My first test call on a Tuesday afternoon around 2 PM actually surprised me. The audio was clear, no weird lag. I thought, okay, this might actually save my butt. Then I tried video calling my wife later that evening, and the picture was decent enough for a quick chat about dinner plans. So first impression? Not flashy, but functional. That’s all I needed.

What It Does Well

The main reason I stuck with it is the call quality on international lines. I’m on T-Mobile, and my office Wi-Fi can be spotty. imo handled the call to Vietnam surprisingly well even when my connection dipped to two bars of 4G. Video calls also held up better than WhatsApp or FaceTime in my experience. Group chat works fine — I started one with my team spread across the U.S. and India, and messages delivered without a hitch. The low international calling rates are legit. I compared them to my carrier’s rates, and imo is way cheaper for calling landlines and mobile numbers abroad. For a busy professional, that adds up fast. Stickers and emojis? Not my thing. But I can see why some people like them. The app also doesn’t drain my battery as much as I expected. I left it running in the background during a three-hour meeting, and my S23 only lost 8% charge. That’s decent. The Discover feature for finding new people? Never touched it. I’m here to work, not make friends.

Where It Falls Short

Okay, here’s where my patience ran out. The interface feels clunky. Scrolling through my contact list sometimes lags, and the search function didn’t find a contact I just added until I closed and reopened the app. That’s annoying when I’m trying to fire off a quick message. More importantly, I had an issue where a voicemail from my client never showed up. I waited two days, restarted my phone, reinstalled the app — nothing. So I contacted support through their in-app help button. Their response arrived 11 hours later and basically said “try restarting your device.” I replied explaining I already did that. Another 14 hours passed, and they sent the same generic script. I finally sent a frustrated message, and got an email from a support rep named “Alex” who told me to clear my cache. It didn’t fix anything. I eventually found the voicemail buried in a notification I hadn’t seen. That wasted half my week. Also, the app sometimes randomly signs me out. That’s happened twice in three days. For a professional tool, that’s unacceptable.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free for basic calls, messages, and video chats, so yes, it’s worth zero dollars for that. The paid feature is the low-rate international calling to actual phone numbers. I paid about $2.99 for a small credit pack to test it. The call connected, and the rate was clearly displayed. I’ll probably reload another $5 because for my project, it beats paying AT&T’s absurd per-minute fees. If you only use it for app-to-app communication, you’re getting what you pay for. But if you’re like me and need reliable voicemail delivery and fast support? You might want to keep a backup app handy. I’m not saying it’s overpriced — it’s literally free for most stuff. But the time I wasted dealing with support has a cost. I’d rather pay a few bucks for an app that doesn’t ghost my voicemails.

Developer & Support

The developer, imo.im, clearly knows how to build a stable calling platform. The core technology works. But their support team is a mess. Slow responses, copy-paste answers, and zero ownership of the problem. I’m used to dealing with enterprise tools at work where I get a ticket number and a callback within an hour. Here, I got a chatbot that didn’t understand me and then a human who didn’t read my history. I’m guessing the support agents are understaffed or overloaded. Either way, if you run into any real issue, prepare to wait. I’d also like to see more frequent updates. The app feels like it hasn’t had a visual refresh in years. That’s not a dealbreaker for me, but it makes me wonder if they’re still actively improving things or just coasting.

Privacy & Safety

I’m not paranoid, but I’m careful. imo asks for your phone number, access to your contacts, camera, and microphone. Standard stuff for a calling app. Their privacy policy says they collect usage data and device info for improving services. That’s typical. However, I didn’t find any end-to-end encryption claims for regular chats. Voice and video calls are encrypted in transit, but the messages? It’s unclear. That gives me pause. I wouldn’t discuss sensitive business contracts over imo text chat. For casual calls with family or clients about non-confidential stuff, it’s fine. Also, the app is owned by a company based in the U.S., so it falls under U.S. data laws. I didn’t see any major red flags, but I also didn’t feel completely reassured. If privacy is your top concern, look elsewhere. For me, it’s a trade-off I can accept for the low calling rates.
