Daily Use Experience

I use this thing way more than I expected. Usually I pull it out when I’m on a walk or watering my plants on Saturday mornings. The camera works great in normal daylight but struggles a bit in the evening or when it’s cloudy — sometimes it tells me “low confidence” and asks for a clearer shot. That’s a bit annoying but I get it. The app feels smooth on my phone, no lag or crashes so far. One thing that bugged me early on was the constant pop-ups asking me to upgrade or subscribe. Like, I’d just identify a dandelion and suddenly there’s a full-screen ad for premium. You can close it but it gets old fast. The free version gives you a handful of IDs per day, which is plenty for me, but if you’re scanning ten plants every afternoon you’ll hit a wall.

Cost Breakdown

So the app is free to download and you get like three free identifications per day — that’s enough for a casual like me. But if you want unlimited IDs and all the extra stuff like personalized care guides and the community features, it’s a subscription. I think it’s around $30 for the year or you can pay monthly. I haven’t bought it yet because I’m cheap and three IDs covers my weekend plant walks. I did notice you can also do a seven-day free trial of premium. I tried it once and honestly the extra stuff was nice but not necessary for someone who just wants to know if a mushroom is safe. If you’re a serious gardener or you’re building a plant collection, the subscription probably pays for itself in peace of mind.

Support Experience

I only had to contact support once. I was trying to save my garden journal and the app kept saying “sync failed” on my OnePlus. I sent them an email on a Tuesday night. They replied back on Friday morning — not super fast but the guy was actually helpful. He walked me through clearing the app cache and re-logging in, which fixed it. I appreciated that he didn’t just send a canned reply. It took a few days which is annoying if you’re mid-crisis, but for a free app I wasn’t expecting instant chat support.

Privacy Verdict

I’ll be honest, I didn’t read the privacy policy word for word. But I did check what data the app collects when I installed it. It wants access to your camera and photos obviously, and it also asks for location to give you local plant recommendations. That makes sense. It also collects some analytics and device info, which is typical. I’m a little wary because the developer is based overseas, but I haven’t seen anything sketchy so far. I keep my plant journal offline mostly anyway. If you’re super paranoid, just don’t snap photos of anything you wouldn’t want shared. But for me, it’s not a dealbreaker — it’s a plant app, not my banking info.
