First Impression

I saw this app with a high rating on the Play Store on my OnePlus phone. I thought, why not? I like baking in real life, but it’s a lot of work. Opening it up, I was greeted with bright colors and big, clear buttons. That was a good start. I tapped on “Bake a Cake” and it just started. No complicated menus to figure out. I made my first cake last Tuesday morning with my coffee. It was a simple chocolate one with pink frosting, and I felt a little spark of joy saving it to my photos. It felt like a digital version of my old craft projects.

What It Does Well

The best part is how easy it is to just play. You pick a pan, tap to mix the batter, tap to bake it. The decorating is where the fun is. There are so many sprinkles, fruits, and little candies to pile on. I spent a whole afternoon last week trying to recreate my granddaughter Lily’s birthday cake from last year. I got pretty close! The buttons for choosing colors and tools are nice and large, so my fingers don’t press the wrong thing. It’s very forgiving—if you put a cherry in a silly spot, you can just undo it. For a free game, it offers a surprising amount of creative freedom without being overwhelming.

Where It Falls Short

My main frustration is with the locked items. I saw a beautiful tiered cake stand and some delicate sugar flowers I wanted to use. To get them, you either have to play for what feels like forever to earn enough coins, or watch an ad. I don’t mind an ad now and then, but it really interrupts the peaceful feeling. Also, some of the instructions in the mini-games are confusing. There’s one where you have to match cupcakes, and the rules weren’t clear at all. I just tapped around until it worked. The menu where you view all your saved cakes is also a bit cluttered and not as simple as the main game.

Is It Worth the Price?

As a free app, it’s absolutely worth downloading. You can have a lot of fun without spending a penny. I’ve never felt forced to buy anything. The ads are mostly those short videos you choose to watch for extra coins. They pop up between baking sessions sometimes, but it’s not constant. I looked at the VIP subscription, but for how I play—maybe 20 minutes a day—it doesn’t make sense for me. If you have a child who would play this daily, maybe it’s worth it to remove the ads. For a casual player like myself, the free version is just fine.

Developer & Support

This is where I was let down. I had an issue where the app crashed every time I tried to use a specific blue food coloring. I figured I’d report it to be helpful. I found the contact link in the app’s settings and sent a message describing the problem. A week went by with no reply. I finally got a response that just said “Thank you for your feedback, we are working on updates.” That was it. No “we’ll look into the blue dye,” no apology for the wait. It felt very impersonal and made me feel like they weren’t really listening. It’s a shame because the app itself is quite nice.

Privacy & Safety

The app asks for permission to save photos to your device, which makes sense because you’ll want to save your cakes. I was comfortable allowing that. It didn’t ask for anything strange like access to my contacts or location. I checked the privacy policy, and while it’s full of legal jargon, it seems like a standard policy for a free game with ads. They talk about collecting data for the ads you see. I haven’t noticed anything odd happening on my phone since I installed it. It feels safe for a bit of casual play, but as with any free app, I’m not sharing any personal information in it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I start baking and decorating a cake in the app?

Simply tap the 'Bake a Cake' button on the main screen to jump right in. You’ll choose a pan, mix the batter, bake it, and then decorate with a wide variety of sprinkles, fruits, and candies using large, easy-to-tap buttons.

Can I save or share the cakes I create?

Yes, you can save your finished cakes to your device's photo gallery. The app also has a menu where you can view all your saved creations, though some users find that menu a bit cluttered compared to the main game.

Why are some items like cake stands and sugar flowers locked, and how do I unlock them?

These premium items are locked behind a currency system. You can earn coins by playing the game for a long time, or you can watch ads to unlock them more quickly. Some users feel the ads interrupt the peaceful gameplay experience.

I'm stuck on a mini-game like the cupcake matching one. What should I do?

Some mini-games have unclear instructions, so just tap around until you figure out the pattern—it usually works. The game is very forgiving, so you can undo mistakes easily without penalty.

How does Cake Maker compare to other baking games like Cooking Mama or Toca Kitchen?

Cake Maker focuses purely on creative cake decorating with a very simple, tap-based process, while Cooking Mama includes a wider range of cooking mini-games. Toca Kitchen is more about freeform food play, but Cake Maker offers more detailed decorating options and a relaxing, low-pressure feel.
