My Experience with Marvel Unlimited

I’ve been using this app for a little over a month on my OnePlus 11, mostly during commutes and lazy Sunday afternoons. I’m not a huge comic book nerd, but I know enough to want to read some classic X-Men stuff without spending a fortune per issue. The first week was fun—I jumped into some old Spider-Man stories and felt like a kid again. But around the third week, I noticed the app would randomly crash when I tried to download comics for offline reading. I was on a bus heading downtown around 6 PM, and it just froze. I had to force close it and restart. That kind of thing happened maybe four times total. I also tried contacting support through the in-app chat about a syncing issue—my reading progress kept resetting. I got a reply two days later that basically said “clear your cache and try again.” It didn’t fix it, and I never heard back after I replied. So support felt like a waste of time, honestly. The library is huge, which is great, but the app itself feels a little bloated on my phone. I found myself frustrated more than I expected.

Features Worth Noting

The smart panel feature is actually cool—it zooms into each panel one at a time, which makes reading on a phone screen way easier. I used it for a whole issue of Avengers and it didn’t skip around. Offline reading sounds great in theory, but I had issues with downloads getting stuck at 98%. That happened with an older Fantastic Four comic, and I had to delete and re-download it. The curated reading lists are helpful if you don’t know where to start—I used one called “X-Men Essentials” and it gave me a solid run of issues. You can also bookmark issues and organize a personal library, which I did for a few Wolverine stories. The app also gives you personalized recommendations based on what you’ve read, but they felt random to me—it suggested a 2019 Captain America issue after I read a 1970s Hulk comic. Syncing across devices works okay, but I only use my phone, so it didn’t matter much. One thing I liked: the weekly new titles addition. It kept the library fresh, even if I didn’t read most of them.

What Needs Work

First, the app drains battery fast on my OnePlus 11. I lost about 20% battery after reading for 45 minutes with brightness at medium. That’s rough. Second, the navigation is messy. There’s too many menus and buttons on the home screen. I spent five minutes just trying to find a specific issue of Silver Surfer. The search bar works, but it’s slow—sometimes it takes 10 seconds to load results. Third, offline downloads are hit or miss. I already mentioned the 98% bug, but also, some comics just won’t download at all. I tried a newer issue of Doctor Strange and it gave me an error three times. Fourth, support is basically non-existent for free trial users. I felt like I was bothering them. Fifth, the app sometimes forgets where I left off if I close it for a few hours. Not a huge deal, but annoying when you’re in the middle of a good story. For a subscription app, these bugs feel lazy.

Pricing

I’m a budget-conscious person, so I only used the free trial. It’s a 7-day trial, but I saw some people online say they got a month with a promo code. I didn’t find one. After the trial, it’s $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year. That’s cheaper than buying individual comics, sure, but $10 a month adds up. I compared it to other comic apps like Comixology Unlimited, which is also around $6 a month and has a similar library size. Marvel Unlimited’s price feels high for the bugs I experienced. I wanted to love it for the value, but paying $70 upfront for a year feels risky when the app crashes. There’s no free tier, so you either pay or you leave. That rubbed me the wrong way. I get that they need to make money, but a lot of users just want to test it longer than a week.

Developer Notes

The app is made by Marvel Comics themselves, so you’d think they’d put more polish into it. Updates seem to come every few months based on the changelog, but I haven’t seen any big fixes in the last month I used it. The developer doesn’t respond much on the Google Play reviews either—I saw a ton of complaints about the same offline download bug from months ago, and no replies. It feels like they focus on adding new comics instead of fixing the app. That’s a bummer because the content is great, but the experience suffers. I also noticed the app has a “report a bug” option, but I didn’t bother after my support experience. If you’re a hardcore Marvel fan, you might tolerate this, but I expected better from the company behind Iron Man.

Security & Privacy

I checked the app permissions before installing. It asks for storage access (for offline downloads) and network access. That’s pretty standard. No weird permissions like contacts or location, which I appreciated. The app uses your Marvel account to log in, which is tied to their main website. I didn’t see any two-factor authentication option, which made me a little nervous. My OnePlus 11 runs Android 13, and I didn’t get any security warnings. The privacy policy says they collect reading data for recommendations, which is typical. I didn’t notice any suspicious battery drain or ads, so that’s good. But I’d still recommend using a strong password for your Marvel account, especially if you’re paying for a subscription. No shady stuff, but no standout security features either.
