My Experience with Contacts

My friend Margaret kept telling me I should try the Google Contacts app. She said it would stop me from losing people’s numbers. I finally gave it a go on my Samsung phone last Tuesday after I tried to call my grandson and realized I had saved his new number on my old tablet, not my phone. It was so frustrating. Setting it up was easier than I thought. I just logged in with my Gmail and, like magic, all the people I email were already there. For three days, it’s been quietly doing its job. I added my new doctor’s number on my phone, and later that evening when I was on my laptop, there it was. That part is very handy. But when I had a question, getting help was a different story.

Features Worth Noting

The best thing is it just works in the background. I don’t have to think about it. When I save a contact now, I know it’s saved for good, not just on one device. The search bar at the top is my favorite part. Yesterday at the grocery store, I needed to ask my neighbor about a recipe. I typed “Barb” and her card came up right away. I also found a button that said “Fix & manage” which found two entries for my sister-in-law. I tapped “Merge” and it cleaned that up for me. I like that I can add little notes to a person’s card. I put “Allergic to penicillin” on my husband’s contact, which feels smart.

What Needs Work

The app is a bit too plain for my taste. Everything is white and grey, and sometimes buttons don’t look like buttons you should press. I wanted to sort my list by last name instead of first name, and I had to tap three different menus to find that setting. It was hidden away. My real issue was with support. I couldn’t figure out how to stop it from suggesting I add every person I’ve ever emailed as a contact. I sent a message through their help system two days ago. The reply I got back was a long, confusing article link that didn’t answer my question. It left me feeling like they didn’t really want to help someone who isn’t tech-savvy.

Pricing

It’s free. There’s no charge, no subscription, nothing to buy. For what it does—keeping all my contacts in one safe place that I can reach from anywhere—that’s a very good deal. I was worried there would be a catch or it would ask for money later, but it hasn’t. If you already use Gmail, you’re already using the system behind this app anyway. You can’t beat the price.

Developer Notes

The app is made by Google, so you know it’s not some fly-by-night company. It gets updates now and then from the Play Store. I saw one come in yesterday, though I couldn’t tell you what it changed. It seems well-maintained and works fine on my new phone. I just wish the people behind it would remember that not everyone who uses it is a computer expert. A little clearer guidance in the app itself would go a long way.

Security & Privacy

This is a big one for me. All my contacts live with my Google account. That means it’s as secure as my Gmail password. I have a strong password and the two-step verification turned on, so I feel okay about it. It’s an official app from Google in the Play Store, so I trust it more than some random app I’ve never heard of. I just have to remember that Google now has all that information, which is the trade-off for the convenience.

Frequently asked questions
How does the automatic contact syncing work across devices?

Once you log in with your Gmail account, the app syncs all your contacts across any device where you're signed in. For example, if you save a new contact on your phone, it will automatically appear on your laptop later that same day.

Can I merge duplicate contacts in the app?

Yes, there is a 'Fix & manage' button that scans for duplicate entries and lets you merge them with a single tap. This is great for cleaning up multiple listings of the same person, like your sister-in-law.

Why does the app keep suggesting I add people I've only emailed as contacts?

By default, the app suggests contacts based on people you frequently email through Gmail. To stop these suggestions, go into Settings, look for 'Suggestions' or 'Smart features,' and turn off the option for auto-adding email contacts.

How do I change the sort order from first name to last name?

The sort setting is a bit hidden. Open the app, tap your profile picture or the three-line menu, then go to 'Settings' > 'Sort order' and choose 'Last name.' It may take a few taps, but once set, your list will stay sorted that way.

How does Google Contacts compare to the default Samsung Contacts app?

Google Contacts focuses on seamless syncing across all your devices and Gmail, while the Samsung app is more tied to your phone. Google's search is faster and it has a handy merge tool, but the Samsung app may feel more colorful and have better on-device support.
