About AR Drawing : Trace Anything

My granddaughter showed me a picture she drew using this app and I was curious. I’ve always liked sketching but getting the shapes right is the hardest part for me. I thought, what the heck, it’s free, I’ll give it a try on my Google Pixel. For over a year now, it’s been my little creative escape. Last Tuesday morning, I sat at my kitchen table and traced the pattern on my favorite china teacup. It came out perfectly, just like the real thing. It doesn’t make me a great artist, but it lets me make neat pictures of things I love, which is the whole point for me.

Features & Highlights

The main thing is the tracing. You point your phone’s camera at something and its outline shows up right on your screen. You just draw over the lines. It feels like magic the first time you do it. I traced a photo of my late husband right from the frame on the mantelpiece. The layers feature is clever, though it took me a minute to understand. I put the outline of my cat, Whiskers, on one layer and the details of his fur on another, so I could color him in without messing up his shape. The brushes are fine, I mostly stick to the simple pencil or a marker. I do wish I could just tap on a color in the room, like the red of an apple, and have the app use that exact shade. That would be handy.

User Experience

It’s simple when it works, but it can be fussy. The lighting has to be just right. My living room lamp in the evening wasn’t bright enough and the app got confused. I had to move to the sunroom. Once it locks on, it’s great. But holding the phone up steady to trace something big, like a vase, makes my arm ache. The picture can wobble if your hand shakes, which mine does sometimes. The buttons are a bit small and close together for my fingers. More than once I’ve tapped the “new brush” icon when I just wanted to undo a little mistake, and then I’d have to find my old brush again. It’s a small thing, but it interrupts the flow.

Pricing

The app didn’t cost me anything to download. It shows ads along the bottom of the screen, and every so often a video ad pops up when you switch tools. They’re a minor annoyance, but not terrible. There is an option to pay a few dollars to remove the ads and get more layers. For what I do—simple tracings of one or two objects—the free version has been just fine. I haven’t felt the need to pay. If I ever wanted to make a really complicated picture with lots of parts, I might consider it for the extra layers.

Updates & Support

The app does get updates, which is good. A few months back, one update really helped with the tracing sticking to the object better. My experience with their help team wasn’t as good, though. Back in the fall, the app kept closing every time I tried to save a drawing of my garden gnome. I sent an email through their contact form. It took over a week to get a reply, and the message was vague, just saying they were “working on it” and to “try again later.” I felt a bit brushed off. The problem did eventually go away after another update, but I would have appreciated a clearer, quicker response.

Security & Privacy

I got it from the Google Play Store on my phone, so I trust that it’s safe. It needs permission to use the camera, obviously, because that’s the whole function. I didn’t see anything strange happening with my phone after installing it. It hasn’t asked for any odd permissions or popped up with strange messages. I use it, I close it, and that’s that. For a drawing app, it seems harmless enough on the privacy front.

Frequently asked questions
How does the tracing feature work in AR Drawing?

You simply point your phone's camera at any object or image, and the app displays its outline on your screen. You can then draw directly over those lines, making it easy to replicate shapes like a teacup pattern or a photo from a frame.

What is the layers feature and how do I use it?

Layers let you separate different parts of your drawing, like putting the outline of your cat on one layer and the fur details on another. This way you can color or edit one part without messing up the rest, which is great for keeping shapes clean.

Why does the app sometimes lose tracking or not work well?

The app needs good, even lighting to lock onto your subject—dim lamps or evening light can confuse it. If your hand shakes or you have to hold the phone for a long time, the picture may wobble, so try steadying your phone on a table or using a stand.

I keep accidentally tapping the wrong buttons. Is there a fix?

The buttons are small and close together, so it's easy to hit 'new brush' when you meant 'undo.' To avoid this, take your time tapping and consider using a stylus. The app doesn't have a way to resize buttons, but practicing slow taps helps.

How does AR Drawing compare to other tracing apps like SketchAR?

Unlike SketchAR, which often requires you to select a pre-loaded image, AR Drawing lets you trace anything in real-time using your camera. While SketchAR has more advanced editing tools, AR Drawing is simpler and feels more like magic for tracing everyday objects, though it depends more on lighting.
