My Experience with Property Brothers Home Design

I’ve had this app on my Samsung Galaxy S23 for about two weeks now, and I downloaded it out of pure curiosity after seeing someone mention it on Reddit. I’m the type of person who tests every single free feature before spending a cent, so I went in with my guard up. The first surprise? It actually lets you play around for a while without hitting a paywall. I spent a good hour last Saturday evening rearranging a living room, trying out different wallpaper patterns and couch colors. The 3D view is pretty neat — I’ll admit I spun that virtual room around like a kid with a toy. But I quickly noticed that the really gorgeous furniture pieces have little price tags on them, and they’re not cheap. You can earn some coins through gameplay, but it’s slow. Features Worth Noting

The 3D visualization tool is probably the main reason to keep this app on your phone. It actually helps you picture how a room might look, which is more than I can say for some other design apps I’ve tried. You can rotate the camera and zoom in on details — I caught myself checking if the rug pattern looked right under the virtual coffee table. The furniture catalog is decent for a free app. They’ve got a bunch of styles, from modern farmhouse to mid-century, and you can mix and match colors and fabrics. The design challenges are hit or miss. I tried one called “Cozy Den Makeover” and the judging felt random — I placed my sofa in one spot and got a low score, then re-did it with the exact same items in a different order and somehow did better. Also, the Property Brothers pop up every so often with tips, which feels more like a commercial break than advice. One tip was “choose a focal point,” which… yeah, I already knew that.

What Needs Work

The biggest issue is the pricing model. Some items are locked behind premium currency that you can only get with real money or by grinding through dozens of levels. I get that developers need to make money, but I hit a wall around level 12 where almost every nice sofa or painting was behind a paywall. The game feels designed to frustrate you into buying gems. Another thing: the app crashed twice on my S23 during the third week. Once when I was trying to save a design, and I lost my progress. That stung. I contacted support through the app’s help menu, and it took them 4 days to reply with a generic message that basically said “try restarting your device.” I had already done that. No follow-up. Not great. Also, the loading times between rooms are slow. I’m on a decent Wi-Fi connection, and it still takes 10-15 seconds to switch between a kitchen and a bedroom. That adds up when you’re just trying to browse.

Pricing

It’s listed as free, but let’s be real — it’s a freemium app with aggressive in-app purchases. You can download it and play through the first several levels without spending a dime, but the moment you want a unique item or a special color option, the game nudges you toward the shop. Gems cost real money, and the starter pack is like $2.99 for a handful of them. I didn’t buy anything, and I don’t plan to. The value just isn’t there for me. Some bundles go up to $99.99 for a ton of gems, which feels absurd for a mobile design game. If you’re like me and hate surprise costs, be prepared to either grind forever or pay up. I’d rather save that cash for actual paint at the hardware store.

Storm8 Studios has a bunch of these simulation games, and honestly, Property Brothers Home Design feels like a reskin of their other apps with a celebrity face slapped on. You can tell they recycle mechanics. The game saves to the cloud, which is nice if you switch phones, but the sync isn’t instant. I switched from my tablet to my phone once and lost a design I had just finished. The developer updates the app regularly with new items, but those updates often add more paid content rather than fixing bugs. The support experience left me cold — slow, vague, and unhelpful. For an app with a 4.6 rating, I expected more care.

Security & Privacy

You have to create an account to save your progress, which means giving them an email and setting a password. I didn’t see any two-factor authentication options, which is a little concerning. The privacy policy is the standard legalese — they collect data on your activity, device info, and possibly location. I disabled a few permissions like camera and microphone because the app definitely doesn’t need those. No major red flags, but I wouldn’t link this account to anything important. I used a throwaway email just to be safe.
