First Impression

Right off the bat, the app looked a lot flashier than I expected for something free. I’m on a Samsung Galaxy S23, and the home screen widget actually matched my phone’s theme pretty well. But I’ve been burned before by pretty apps that hide all the useful stuff behind a paywall, so I spent the first evening poking around every menu. Tuesday night, I had it open while a thunderstorm rolled through my neighborhood in Phoenix, and the live radar was actually refreshing fast enough to see the storm cells moving. That surprised me. But I also noticed a tiny “Upgrade to Premium” button sitting right next to the 7-day forecast, which made me suspicious. I figured the real test was using it for two weeks without giving in to any pop-ups or trials.

What It Does Well

The live radar map is the star here. I’m not a weather nerd, but I liked being able to pinch-zoom into my street and see exactly where the rain was. The app refreshed radar data every few minutes, which was faster than my default Samsung weather app. I also appreciated that the 7-day forecast wasn’t buried in ads—I scrolled down and saw high/low temps, humidity, and wind speed without hitting a video ad first. The severe weather alerts also popped up as a notification on Friday during a dust storm warning, which was useful because I was outside grilling and wouldn’t have checked my phone otherwise. For a free app, the core weather info is solid and presented in a clean, readable way. I didn’t feel overwhelmed by graphs or jargon.

Where It Falls Short

Here’s the thing that bugs me as a budget-conscious user: the free version feels deliberately incomplete. The hourly forecast only shows the next 12 hours unless you tap into a specific day. The “customizable alerts” they advertise are basically just severe weather warnings—you can’t set custom rain alerts or temperature thresholds without the paid plan. And that interactive map? It’s smooth, but every time I zoomed in too far, a banner ad popped up at the bottom and covered part of the map. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s annoying when I’m trying to see if a storm is heading my way. Also, the app drains battery faster than I expected. After a day of checking the radar a few times, my phone was noticeably warmer. For a weather app, that feels unnecessary.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free, so technically it’s worth zero dollars. But I hate apps that tease you with features then try to upsell. The free version gives you enough to get by if you just need basic forecasts and a radar view. But if you’re someone who wants detailed hourly outlooks or actual custom alerts, you’ll feel like you’re missing out. I saw the premium subscription is something like $3.99 a month, and honestly? I wouldn’t pay that. There are other free weather apps that don’t nickel-and-dime you for hourly data. For me, the value stops at “good enough for checking if I need a jacket tomorrow.” If you’re a weather fanatic, you might feel differently, but my wallet says no.

Developer & Support

I haven’t contacted support because the app worked fine for me technically—no crashes or weird glitches. But I browsed the App Store reviews to get a feel for the dev, and I saw a mix. Some people complained that support never answered their emails about lost premium features. Others said bugs got fixed quickly after updates. Since I didn’t have my own experience, I’m hesitant to trust the negative reviews completely, but the pattern suggests the developer is more focused on pushing new features than helping free users. That’s a red flag for me. An app should work well for everyone, not just paid subscribers. Still, my time with the app was smooth, so I can’t fault them for my lack of interaction.

Privacy & Safety

I checked the privacy policy before installing because I’m paranoid about weather apps selling my location data. Weather Home – Live Radar collects location data, device ID, and usage data—standard stuff. They say they share it with third-party analytics, which every free app does. But there’s no option to opt out of data collection in the free version. You can turn off location access in your phone settings, but then the app basically becomes useless. It also asks for permission to run in the background for alerts. I allowed it, but I kept an eye on my battery life. So far, I haven’t noticed any shady behavior, but I’d be lying if I said I felt 100% safe. The developer isn’t a huge name, so I’m keeping my guard up.
