First Impression

I’ll be straight with you — I downloaded SCRUFF about two weeks ago because my friend Marco kept telling me it was better for actually meeting people than swiping endlessly on other apps. I have a Samsung Galaxy A54 and it installed fine from the Play Store. First thing I noticed was the permission screen. It wants access to your photos, location (fine, that’s expected), but also your contacts and storage? That made me pause. I said no to contacts right away. The sign-up process was quick though — picked a username, uploaded a couple photos, filled in my age and tribe preferences. The interface felt a bit cluttered, like they threw every feature into a blender. Lots of buttons and tabs. I spent a good 20 minutes just poking around trying to figure out where everything was. Thursday evening around 9pm, I got my first message from a guy named Chris. We chatted for a bit. It was fine.

What It Does Well

The community aspect is legit. There’s an events section that shows local LGBTQ+ gatherings near me. I actually found a drag brunch happening next Saturday that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise. The travel companion feature is clever too — if you’re going somewhere new, you can see who’s local and ask for tips or meet up. That’s unique and useful. The matching algorithm seems less aggressive than other apps. I didn’t get bombarded with notifications every five minutes. Profiles have enough space to actually write something about yourself, not just a bio line. You can list your interests, what you’re looking for, even your HIV status and PrEP usage in a respectful way. I appreciated that transparency. The chat function works fine — messages send quickly, photos load without lag. I also like that you can see who viewed your profile without paying, at least for the last few people. It gave me a sense of who was actually interested.

Where It Falls Short

The biggest annoyance? The free version is aggressively limited. You get a certain number of swipes per day and then you’re cut off. Want to see who liked you first? That’s premium. Want unlimited messages? Premium. Want to filter by body type or position? Premium. The app feels like it’s constantly reminding you to upgrade. And the interface is honestly kind of ugly. Not in a charming way — in a “this design is from 2015” way. The colors are weird, the font choices are dated, and some buttons are too small to tap easily on my A54. I accidentally clicked on a profile I didn’t mean to three times in one session. Also, the user base in my area (medium-sized city in the Midwest) is noticeably smaller than other apps. I saw a lot of the same faces repeated. After a week, I’d pretty much exhausted the local pool. And the app crashed once during a chat — just froze and kicked me out. Had to restart it.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free to download, so you’re not losing anything by trying it. But the premium subscription? I looked into it. It’s about $20 a month or $100 for a year. For what you get? I’d say no. Not when free versions of other apps give you more features without begging for your credit card. The events feature is nice, but it’s not worth monthly money. If you live in a big city like New York or LA with tons of active users, maybe the premium is worth it for the filtering and unlimited swipes. But for most people in smaller areas? Stick with the free version and just accept the limits. I won’t be subscribing. I’d rather spend that $20 on actual plans with people I meet.

Developer & Support

I had an issue where my chat history disappeared after the app crashed. I contacted support through their in-app form on a Tuesday. I got an automated reply saying they’d get back to me within 72 hours. It actually took four days — a bit slow for a dating app where conversations are time-sensitive. But when they did reply, the person (a human, not a bot) was polite and helpful. They restored my chat logs and apologized for the delay. So the support team exists and works, just not quickly. Points for effort, minus points for speed. I’d like to see live chat or at least faster response times, especially since they’re collecting money from subscribers.

Privacy & Safety

Here’s where I have concerns. I read through their privacy policy — and yes, I’m that person. They collect a lot: your device ID, IP address, browsing behavior within the app, location history, and they share data with third-party analytics and advertising partners. They also ask for access to your contacts and storage, which I blocked immediately. The app itself has safety features like blocking and reporting users, which is standard. You can also hide your profile from straight users or choose who sees your distance. That’s good. But the data collection feels excessive for a dating app. I messaged support about what exactly they do with my location data and got a generic response about “improving user experience.” That didn’t reassure me. I wish they had clearer, more transparent settings for data minimization. For now, I’m using it sparingly and I recommend others do the same — don’t grant unnecessary permissions and turn off location when you’re not actively using it.
