First Impression

I downloaded Realistic Clock – Watch Face specifically for my iPhone 15 Pro because I was tired of the boring default Apple Watch faces that all look like toys. I wanted something that actually looked like a real mechanical watch when I glanced at my wrist during meetings at the office. The screenshots looked promising — nice textures, deep blacks, and that satisfying simulated second-hand sweep. First time I installed it, I was actually impressed by the rendering. The hands have this subtle shadow effect that caught my eye. But the honeymoon period ended fast when I noticed the complications weren’t syncing properly. Last Tuesday, I set the weather widget to show temperature and instead got a spinning circle for three hours. That first impression was like a movie with an amazing trailer and a messy second act.

What It Does Well

When this app works, it works well. The analog faces are genuinely detailed — the brushed metal textures, the font choices on the numerals, the way the chronograph sub-dials are positioned. It’s clear the developer spent time on the visual design. I particularly like the battery optimization. My watch would go from 100% to 85% in about six hours with an official Apple face, and with this app it’s maybe 82%. Not a huge hit at all. The customization options for colors and complications are broad enough that I’ve made three distinct faces — one for work with calendar and timer, one for weekends with weather and activity rings, and a night mode with red accents that’s easy on the eyes. The notification integration works reliably when it does work, though I’ll get into that later. The date display is accurate and the timekeeping on my Series 9 has never been off by a second.

Where It Falls Short

Here’s where my frustration lives. The complications randomly stop refreshing. I set the battery complication and sometimes it shows my iPhone’s battery, sometimes my watch battery, and sometimes it just shows a line. By the way, I have the Pixelmator bug report screenshots to prove it. The weather location display is wildly inaccurate — I live in Chicago and on three separate occasions it showed me temperature data from what looked like a default zip code 200 miles away. Customization options feel like you’re drowning in choices but without any clear reasoning behind them. There are 42 color presets but only 4 actually look good on the Always-On Display. The rest wash out or look muddy. Also, the developer stopped updating it four months ago. No new faces, no bug fixes. For a paid app, that’s lazy. I’ve had it straight-up crash twice during workouts when I needed to check the time quickly. Not ideal when you’re in the middle of a deadlift.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s a paid app, not subscription-based, so that’s a plus. You buy it once and you own it. But let’s be real — for $4.99, you’re getting a visually impressive watch face that has significant reliability issues. Compare this to free alternatives like Facer or even some free Apple faces that never crash. The battery efficiency is genuinely good, which probably saves me from charging my watch mid-day, so there’s value there. However, the lack of updates and the fact that my complications break weekly means I’m considering switching back to stock faces. The math is simple: if you value looks over reliability and you’re willing to fiddle with settings every few days, go for it. If you want something that just works without thinking about it, skip it.

Developer & Support

I emailed support about the weather location issue on February 14th. Received an auto-reply that said “we’ll get back to you within 72 hours.” Took them eight days to respond, and the response was basically “try reinstalling the app.” I replied saying I’d already done that three times. That was February 28th. Haven’t heard back. It’s now mid-April. The developer, EK Watch Faces, seems to have abandoned this project. No social media presence, no update history on the App Store page beyond the initial release. If you’re someone who needs responsiveness and regular patches, this is not the developer for you. I get that small teams have limited resources but four months of silence on a paid product is unacceptable.

Privacy & Safety

The app requests location access for weather features, which makes sense, but I found it odd that it also asks for “Bluetooth & Peripheral Access” even when not in use. I checked the privacy policy — it’s the standard boilerplate, basically saying they collect usage data for analytics. Nothing about selling data, which is good. But I’m not comfortable that the app keeps running location services in the background even when the weather complication isn’t active. On my iPhone 15 Pro, I had to manually revoke “Always” location permission and set it to “While Using.” Also no mention of end-to-end encryption for any synced data. It’s not alarmingly bad, but it’s not great either. For a watch face app, I’d expect minimal data collection — time, date, maybe weather. Not background location pings.

About Our PRO Experience

I’m not a reviewer or tech writer — just a guy who likes his gadgets to work properly. I bought this app in January on the App Store for my Apple Watch Series 9 paired with an iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 17.3.1. I use it daily, about 14 hours a day, mostly with the “Classic Chronograph” face. I run, I work, I sleep with it on. That’s my context.

Frequently asked questions
How do I fix the complications not refreshing on Realistic Clock – Watch Face?

Try force-closing the app and reopening it on your iPhone, then re-sync with your Apple Watch. If the issue persists, remove and re-add the specific complication from the watch face customization menu, as this often resets the data connection.

Why does the weather complication show the wrong location on Realistic Clock – Watch Face?

This is a known bug where the app sometimes defaults to a generic zip code instead of your actual location. To fix it, open the app on your iPhone, manually set your location in the weather settings, and ensure location permissions are set to 'While Using the App' for more accurate data.

Can I customize the Always-On Display colors on Realistic Clock – Watch Face?

Yes, but only about 4 of the 42 color presets look good on the Always-On Display, as the rest wash out or appear muddy. Stick to high-contrast colors like red or white for the night mode, and test each preset by enabling the Always-On preview in the customization menu.

Why does Realistic Clock – Watch Face crash during workouts on my Apple Watch?

This is a known issue likely caused by memory strain when the app runs alongside workout tracking. To minimize crashes, close other apps on your watch before starting a workout, and ensure your watchOS is updated to the latest version, as the developer hasn't released a fix in four months.

How does Realistic Clock – Watch Face compare to the default Apple Watch faces?

Realistic Clock offers far more detailed analog designs with brushed metal textures and shadow effects, making it look like a real mechanical watch, unlike the toy-like default faces. However, it suffers from unreliable complications and occasional crashes, while Apple's faces are more stable and consistently updated, so you trade visual quality for reliability.
