About LearnEnglish Videos

I downloaded this app because my grandson moved to Canada and I want to understand his videos better without always asking my daughter to translate. I’ve had it on my iPhone for about two weeks now. The idea is great: you watch short little videos about everyday things and then answer a few questions. It’s not like those complicated language apps with all the bells and whistles that confuse me. This one just has videos, which I like. It feels more like I’m learning by watching a pleasant TV programme than doing homework.

Features & Highlights

The best part is definitely the videos themselves. They’re nice and short, so I don’t lose focus. Last Tuesday morning, I watched one about a man making a traditional British breakfast while I had my own cup of tea. I learned the word “rasher” for a slice of bacon! The little quiz that popped up afterwards asked me to put the cooking steps in order, and I got it right. That felt good. I also figured out how to download a few videos about going to the doctor, which was handy for my appointment last week where I had to wait. I didn’t need the internet, just my phone.

User Experience

For someone like me who isn’t tech-savvy, the app is mostly easy to get around. The screen isn’t cluttered with buttons. I can find videos about food or travel without much fuss. But, and this is a big one, the video player is too basic. Sometimes people in the interviews talk too fast for me. I kept looking for a way to slow it down, like I can on YouTube, but there isn’t one. I had to replay one segment three times last Thursday and I still missed a word. It’s frustrating when the solution seems so simple.

Pricing

You can’t argue with the price. It’s completely free. No monthly fees, no annoying ads popping up in the middle of a lesson. After you’ve paid for the phone itself, it’s nice to find a useful app that doesn’t immediately ask for your credit card. For what it offers, it’s very generous. The British Council isn’t trying to trick you into a subscription, which I appreciate.

Updates & Support

This is where my experience went sour. I couldn’t get the sound to work on one of the downloaded videos. I tapped every setting I could find. So, I used the “Contact Support” link in the app. I explained my problem clearly. Two days later, I got a reply. It was a generic message asking me to check my phone’s volume and make sure I was online. I had already done both, and the point was the video was downloaded for *offline* use. I wrote back and never heard another word. It left me feeling like they don’t really care if one retiree has a problem.

Security & Privacy

I got it from the proper Apple App Store on my phone, so I trust it’s safe. It did ask me to make an account with my email to save my progress. That’s fine, I suppose, but I always wonder what these companies do with that information. Their privacy policy is linked, but it’s full of legal language that’s hard to follow. I just had to hope for the best and sign up.

Frequently asked questions
Can I watch videos offline with the LearnEnglish Videos app?

Yes, you can download videos for offline viewing. This is handy for situations like appointments where you might not have internet access, allowing you to learn anywhere.

Does the app have a feature to slow down the video playback speed?

No, the app currently lacks a playback speed control feature. This can be frustrating if you find the speakers in the videos are talking too quickly, as noted in some user reviews.

What should I do if the sound isn't working on a downloaded video?

First, check your device's volume and ensure the video is fully downloaded. If the problem persists, contact support, but be aware some users have reported receiving generic, unhelpful troubleshooting responses.

How do I get help if I have a problem with the app?

Use the 'Contact Support' link within the app. However, based on user experience, support responses can be slow and generic, and follow-up on unresolved issues may not occur.

How does LearnEnglish Videos compare to other language learning apps like Duolingo?

LearnEnglish Videos focuses solely on short, real-world video lessons and quizzes, making it simpler and less gamified than apps like Duolingo. It is also completely free with no ads or subscriptions, unlike many competitors.
