My Experience with Puzzles & Survival

I downloaded Puzzles & Survival because my friend Sarah raved about it over coffee one Saturday morning. She said it was a fun way to unwind after the kids go to bed. I’ve been playing for about five weeks now, mostly in the evenings when I’m waiting for my daughter to finish her homework. The game caught me off guard at first. I thought it would be a straightforward puzzle app, but it’s actually a mix of matching colored blocks and building up a base to survive against zombies. I’m not a gamer by any stretch, but I quickly got the hang of the match-3 part. Swiping to match blocks to attack zombies felt satisfying. However, the strategy side took me a while to understand. I spent the first week just tapping buttons and hoping for the best. My base looked like a mess until I watched a few YouTube videos by other players. One Tuesday night, I stayed up way too late trying to upgrade my survivors because an event was ending. I regretted it the next morning when I had to wake up early for school drop-off. Still, the game has a way of pulling you in. I like that I can play in short bursts, maybe ten minutes here or there, without losing progress. The zombie theme isn’t too scary for me, but I wouldn’t let my young kids watch me play.

Features Worth Noting

The match-3 puzzles are the heart of the game for me. They’re colorful and give you a real sense of accomplishment when you clear a tough level. You collect resources like wood, metal, and food by completing puzzles, and then use them to build and upgrade buildings in your camp. I was surprised how many things you can unlock. There are different survivors with unique skills, like a doctor who heals faster or a soldier who deals extra damage. I’ve been leveling up a character named Maddie because she’s good at gathering supplies. The alliance feature is something I ignored at first but now appreciate. I joined an alliance called “Last Hope” after a random player invited me. Now I get help speeding up construction and we team up for boss fights on Wednesdays. The graphics are actually decent for a mobile game. The zombies look gross but not terrifying. I also like that the game gives you daily missions and events. It keeps things fresh, though sometimes the events feel like a chore if you want the rewards. There’s a chat feature too, but I’ve kept it muted because some people get a little too competitive.

What Needs Work

Honestly, the biggest issue for me is how pushy the in-app purchases are. Every time I open the game, there’s a pop-up offering some special pack for $4.99 or $9.99. It gets annoying after a while. I get that the developer needs to make money, but it feels like they’re constantly trying to sell you something. Another thing is the pace. Once you get past the first few days, progress slows way down unless you spend money or play for hours. I found myself stuck on one puzzle for three days because I ran out of energy. That part is frustrating. I also think the tutorial could be better. It threw a lot of information at me in the first twenty minutes, and I forgot half of it. I had to google how to train survivors because the game didn’t explain it clearly. Lastly, customer support took several days to reply when I had a question about a missing reward. The person was nice and fixed it, but waiting that long felt like forever when you just want to keep playing.

Puzzles & Survival is free to download, and you can play without spending a dime. I managed to get through the first two weeks without paying, but it got harder. There’s a second builder queue that costs real money, and that’s a big help if you want to build two things at once. I ended up buying a $2.99 starter pack just to speed things up. I’ve also bought the monthly pass once for about $8.99, which gives you extra daily rewards and a faster build time. My rule is I won’t spend more than what I’d pay for a coffee. So far, I’ve spent about $6 total in that month. You can earn some premium currency by completing events, but it’s slow. For a parent on a budget, it’s fine as long as you’re patient. I’d say be careful if your kids have access to your phone because accidental purchases are easy to make.

Developer Notes

The game is made by 37GAMES, and they seem to update it regularly. I’ve seen two updates since I started playing. Each one added new events and fixed a few bugs. The app hasn’t crashed on me once, which is more than I can say for some other free games I’ve tried. The gameplay feels polished for a mobile title. The music and sound effects are decent, though I usually play with the sound off because I’m sitting near my kids. One thing I noticed is that the game asks for permission to access your photos and contacts when you first install it. I declined both and it still works fine. That made me feel a bit weird, but I appreciated that I could say no. The developer also has a privacy policy you can read, but it’s long and boring. I skimmed it and saw they collect data like device info and gameplay stats. That’s pretty standard for free apps, I guess.

Security & Privacy

Since I’m a parent, I’m always careful about what my family uses. The game doesn’t have any inappropriate content beyond the zombie theme. There’s no nudity or bad language in the chat that I’ve seen, but I still keep my chat off just to be safe. When I first installed it, the app asked for permission to access my photos and contacts. That seemed odd for a puzzle game, so I said no. Everything works fine without those permissions. There’s also an in-game store where you can buy things with real money, so I make sure my iPhone’s purchase password is turned on so my kids can’t accidentally buy something. The developer says they follow data protection laws, but I’m not an expert. I just try to be sensible. I wouldn’t let my younger child play this game because the zombie stuff might give them nightmares, but for a teen or adult, it’s fine. I’d give it a 3 out of 5 for safety overall.
