First Impression

I got my puppy, Beans, right before midterms, and I was instantly overwhelmed. Between his shots, feeding schedule, and my class schedule, my notes app was a disaster. A friend in my dorm mentioned Pooca, so I downloaded it on my iPhone. I figured it would be another basic checklist app, but the vibe was different right away. The first screen wasn’t a sign-up wall; it was just a friendly feed of dogs from my city. I saw a corgi wearing a little backpack near the university library and immediately felt less alone in this whole new-pet-owner panic. Setting up Beans’ profile was easy and actually kind of fun, which was a nice break from studying organic chemistry.

What It Does Well

Pooca saves me mental energy, which as a student is my most precious resource. The health tracker is a lifesaver. I took a picture of Beans’ first vet bill, and the app pulled the date for his next vaccine and set a reminder. Last Tuesday, that reminder popped up while I was in the cafeteria, and I was able to book his appointment right then instead of forgetting. The social part is way better than I expected. I posted a question about crate training at 2 AM during a late-night study session, and by morning I had actual advice from three people in my neighborhood. One of them, Sarah from the apartment complex next to mine, even messaged me to set up a puppy playdate at the quad on Saturday. We met up, and now Beans has a friend. For a free app, it feels like it’s actually built for the messy, real parts of having a pet.

Where It Falls Short

It’s not perfect, and some things feel a bit clunky. The biggest thing for me is the local search. When I was desperate to find a pet store open past 9 PM for more puppy pads, the map in the app showed a bunch of pins, but half of them were for vets or groomers that were already closed. The info wasn’t always up-to-date. Also, while the core app is free, you get nudged a lot about “Pooca Plus.” I get that they need to make money, but sometimes a cool feature, like seeing trends in your dog’s mood or weight, is locked behind the paywall. It’s a bit of a tease when you’re trying to be budget-conscious. The app can also drain my battery a bit faster than other social apps if I leave it running in the background with location on.

Is It Worth the Price?

Absolutely, yes. It’s free, and the free version gives you everything you actually need to manage your pet’s basic care and connect with people. I haven’t spent a cent, and it’s replaced like three other things I was trying to use. Compared to buying a physical pet planner or using some subscription-based service, Pooca is a no-brainer for someone like me watching every dollar. The value is in the practical tools that just work and the real connections you can make. I’d only consider the paid version if I suddenly needed super detailed health reports, but for now, the free features are more than enough.

Developer & Support

I haven’t had a reason to contact support because nothing has broken for me. From what I’ve read in the App Store reviews, people seem to have mixed experiences. Some say the developers are responsive and fix bugs quickly, while others mention waiting a while for help with account issues. The app itself feels pretty polished and stable, which makes me think the team knows what they’re doing. They update it regularly with small improvements, which is a good sign. Since I’m using it for free, my expectations for instant support are pretty low, so the fact that it just works is good enough for me.

Privacy & Safety

This was a concern at first, because you’re sharing your location and pictures of your pet. The app lets you control a lot, though. You can make your profile private so only people you approve can see your posts, and you can choose to hide your exact location, showing just your general neighborhood instead. I keep my profile public because I want to meet people, but I’m careful not to post pictures with my dorm room number visible or anything like that. Their privacy policy is pretty clear about not selling your personal data, which is reassuring. It feels as safe as any other social network, maybe a bit safer because the community seems genuinely focused on pets.

Frequently asked questions
How does Pooca's health tracker work?

You can snap a photo of a vet bill or vaccine record, and the app will automatically pull the date for the next shot and set a reminder. It also sends you notifications so you can book appointments right when you get the alert.

Can I connect with other pet owners in my area on Pooca?

Yes, the app features a local feed where you can see posts from dog owners near you, and you can message them directly. One user was able to arrange a puppy playdate with a neighbor after posting a question about crate training.

Why does the local search show closed businesses, and how can I fix it?

The map data for vets and pet stores isn't always updated in real time, so some pins may list places that are already closed. To avoid this, double-check the business hours by tapping the pin and calling ahead before heading out.

I keep seeing prompts for Pooca Plus. Can I still use the app fully without paying?

Yes, the core features like the health tracker, social feed, and reminders are free to use. The prompts for Pooca Plus are for optional extras, so you can ignore them and still get plenty of value from the app.

How does Pooca compare to a basic pet checklist app like PetFirst?

Unlike PetFirst, which is mostly a manual checklist, Pooca automatically pulls vet appointment dates from photos and connects you with local pet owners for real-time advice. It feels more like a social network built for the messy, real parts of pet ownership rather than just a simple task list.
