So last Tuesday I had to drive from Austin to Dallas for a work thing and I was dreading it. I hate silence in the car but I was sick of my music playlists and podcasts were getting boring. I saw Pocket FM in the app store, read some reviews, and figured why not. I picked a drama series called something like “The Perfect Wife” and pressed play. Three hours later I was parked in my hotel lot and I didn’t even want to get out because I needed to know what happened next. The voice actors are actually really good — like, theater-kid good, but in a professional way. The sound effects are solid too. There were moments where I literally gasped out loud at a plot twist. My phone (Google Pixel 7) handled it fine, no weird glitches or crashes. The interface is simple enough that I could swipe to the next episode without taking my eyes off the road for more than a second. But here’s the thing — after a few days the app started to feel a little cluttered. There’s just so much content thrown at you and it’s hard to know what’s actually good versus what’s just promoted. I also noticed the app kept recommending stuff I had no interest in, like romance stories when I clearly was listening to a thriller. It’s a little annoying but not a dealbreaker.

Features Worth Noting

The big selling point is the audio quality. Everything sounds crisp even on my Pixel’s speakers, and there’s an option to download episodes for offline listening which saved me when I hit a dead zone in the middle of nowhere. The auto-play feature works perfectly — it just flows from one episode to the next without any awkward silence. I like that you can adjust playback speed too, because some narrators talk a little slow for my taste. There’s also this thing called “Pocket Coins” which I guess you earn by listening or completing stuff, but honestly I didn’t pay much attention to it. The library is massive though. I mean, thousands of series across genres like drama, thriller, romance, comedy, even some horror. I scrolled through it for like ten minutes one night just to see what was there. Another cool feature is the sleep timer — I fell asleep listening one night and it automatically turned off after 30 minutes, which saved my battery. The app also remembers exactly where you stopped, even if you switch between devices. That came in handy when I wanted to finish an episode on my tablet at home.

What Needs Work

Okay so the biggest problem I had was with the support team. I accidentally bought some coins because the pop-up was super aggressive and I tapped the wrong button. I tried contacting them through the in-app help thing and got this vague automated response that didn’t even address my issue. I waited like two days for a real person to reply and when they finally did, they basically said “sorry, no refunds.” That left a bad taste in my mouth. Also, the free episodes run out fast. Like, you’ll get 3-5 free episodes of a series and then you have to either wait 24 hours for another free one or pay with coins. It feels a little stingy honestly. Some series have over a hundred episodes and if you get hooked, you’re looking at spending real money. The interface can also be sluggish sometimes — I’d tap on a series and there’d be a 2-3 second delay before it loaded. Not a huge deal but on a Pixel 7 it shouldn’t be happening. And one more thing: the recommendations are bad. The app keeps pushing me romance stories even though I’ve only listened to thrillers and mysteries. It’s like it doesn’t pay attention to what I actually like.

Pricing

So the app is free to download and you get a decent amount of free content to start. But if you really get into a series, you’ll quickly hit a paywall. You buy “Pocket Coins” in packs. I think the smallest pack is like $2.99 and the biggest is around $49.99. The coins are used to unlock episodes individually or you can buy a whole series. Honestly, I spent $9.99 on one series and it got me about 40 episodes, which felt okay but not great. Compared to something like Audible where you get a credit per month, this is more of a micro-transaction model. For casual listeners it might be fine, but if you’re a binge listener like me, the costs add up fast. There’s no subscription option which I wish they had — I’d rather pay $10 a month for unlimited access than keep buying coins. Also, some series are clearly priced higher than others depending on popularity, which feels a little unfair.

Developer Notes

I checked the app info and it was last updated about two weeks ago, so they are actually working on it. The developer is Pocket FM Corp and they seem to be based in India or something? I’m not sure. The app runs on Android and I think iOS too. They have a website but I didn’t bother looking at it. One thing I noticed is that the app asks for notifications and storage permissions, which makes sense for downloading episodes. The update notes mentioned bug fixes and performance improvements but honestly I haven’t seen a major change since I started using it. I wish they’d focus more on making the free experience better instead of pushing coins so hard. Also, the app has a lot of content from Indian creators, which is cool but sometimes the English voice actors have accents that are hard to understand. That’s not a developer problem exactly, just something to be aware of.

Security & Privacy

I’m not super paranoid about this stuff but I did notice Pocket FM asks for a lot of permissions. It wants access to your storage, your microphone, and your notifications. The storage thing I get for downloads. Microphone though? That feels invasive. I denied it and the app still worked fine, so I think it’s optional but still sketchy. I also read their privacy policy — which nobody actually reads fully — and it says they collect data like your listening habits, device info, and location. That’s pretty standard for any app but still worth knowing. They also use third-party analytics and ad services. My Pixel 7’s security settings flagged the app as “low risk” but it does have in-app purchases which always make me a little nervous about accidental charges. I set up fingerprint authentication for purchases just to be safe. Overall I don’t think it’s dangerous but if you’re really privacy-focused, you might want to limit what permissions you give it.
