Why I Downloaded Nautide: Tides, Wind, Waves +

My buddy Mark, who sails out of Newport, wouldn’t stop raving about this app. I was skeptical. I’ve been burned by too many weather apps that pull data from a station at the airport, miles from the water. My Pixel 7 is loaded with apps I’ve tested and discarded. But Mark kept sending me screenshots of Nautide’s wave period forecasts that actually matched what we saw at the jetty, so I figured I’d give it one more shot. My bar was high: I needed precision, not just pretty graphs.

Standout Features

The map overlay for wind is legitimately useful. I can zoom in on a specific cove and see the forecasted direction visualized, which is huge for planning a downwinder on the SUP. The tide graph is another winner—it’s not just a line, it shows the rate of change. I can tell if the tide is screaming out or just lazily ebbing, which changes everything for navigating the estuary near my house. The custom alerts are powerful when they work. Setting one for “wind under 8 knots AND swell direction between 180-220” means I get a ping for perfect glassy conditions, no constant checking required.

Daily Use Experience

Most days, it’s great. I open it first thing with my coffee to check the dawn patrol prospects. The home screen dashboard is clean and shows exactly the four metrics I care about. But I push apps, and that’s where the cracks show. Last Thursday, the widget on my Pixel 7 froze for six hours, showing 8am wind data at 2pm. A full phone restart fixed it, but that’s not something a casual user would even try. The app also occasionally forgets my preferred units, switching back to meters and knots when I’m set to feet and mph. It’s a small thing, but in the foggy morning rush, it throws me off.

Cost Breakdown

It’s free with banner ads. The ads are fine, mostly for marine gear, so they’re not totally irrelevant. I eventually subscribed to the premium tier, mainly to get the more granular wave model and to save more locations. For the $4 a month or whatever it is, I expect the bugs I encounter to get fixed. So far, that hasn’t been the case. The value is there in the data quality, but the polish isn’t.

Support Experience

This is the app’s biggest weakness. When the widget bug happened, I emailed support through the app. I got an auto-reply saying they’d get back to me soon. A week later, I got a generic response asking me to “try clearing the app cache” and to make sure my OS was updated. I’d already done both, obviously. I replied with more detail and never heard back. For a power user relying on this for safety and planning, that radio silence is unacceptable. It feels like the app is built and then left to run on autopilot.

Privacy Verdict

The privacy policy is pretty standard. It collects location data (which is the whole point), usage data, and device info. I’m okay with that for the core functionality. I don’t see anything egregious, and it doesn’t feel like my fishing spots are being sold off. They claim data is anonymized and used for improving forecasts. I haven’t noticed weird targeted ads from outside the boating world, so it seems they’re sticking to their lane. It’s not the most transparent policy I’ve ever read, but it’s not a red flag for me either.

Frequently asked questions
What makes Nautide's tide graph different from other apps?

Nautide's tide graph doesn't just show the water level line; it also displays the rate of change, so you can see if the tide is rushing out or slowly ebbing. This is extremely helpful for navigating estuaries or planning activities around precise tidal currents.

How do the custom alerts work in Nautide?

You can set highly specific alerts, like a combination of wind under 8 knots and a swell direction between 180-220 degrees. When those exact conditions are forecasted, the app sends you a notification so you don't have to keep checking manually.

Why did my Nautide widget freeze and show old data?

This is a known bug where the widget can get stuck, displaying wind data from hours ago. A full restart of your phone usually fixes it right away, though it's an annoyance that the developers still need to patch.

The app keeps switching my units back to meters and knots. How do I fix this?

This seems to be a persistent settings bug where the app forgets your preferred units, like feet and mph. Currently, you'll need to manually change them back in the settings each time it happens, as there's no permanent fix yet.

How does Nautide compare to a free app like Windy for sailing?

While Windy is great for general weather visualization, Nautide focuses specifically on marine data like tide rates of change and wave period forecasts that often match real-world conditions better. For serious sailors or paddlers who need hyper-local tide and swell data, Nautide's specialized features are worth the premium subscription.

✓  Pros
✓ Wind direction map overlay is incredibly precise for micro-planning.
✓ Tide graph shows rate of change, not just height.
✓ Custom alerts for complex condition combos are a game-saver.
✓ Data feels hyper-local, not from a distant weather station.
✗  Cons
✗ Widget bugs out and freezes, requiring a phone restart.
✗ Support is slow and provides useless, copy-pasted responses.
✗ Occasionally resets my unit preferences back to default.
