Myths of Moonrise

First Impression

I downloaded this app last Tuesday night because I was sick of scrolling TikTok during my study breaks and wanted something that actually felt interesting but wasn’t homework. The first thing I noticed was the art – it’s really pretty, like someone painted all these moon scenes with actual care. The opening screen has this glowing moon that changes as you tap it, and I sat there for like five minutes just messing with it. I’m not gonna lie, I was half-expecting some cheesy astrology thing, but it’s actually about real myths from different cultures. I read the Greek one first because I recognized the names, and it had little animations that played while the story went on. For a free app, the production quality surprised me. I showed my roommate Maria and she asked if it cost money, which is always a good sign.

What It Does Well

The storytelling is the main thing. Each myth comes with these interactive bits where you tap or swipe to move the story forward, and sometimes there’s a mini-game like matching symbols or rotating a moon phase puzzle to unlock the next part. I suck at puzzles but they’re easy enough that I didn’t get frustrated. The app covers myths I’ve never heard of – there’s one from the Philippines about a moon-eating dragon that was actually kind of scary. The visuals change depending on the region, so the Japanese myths have this paper-cut animation style while the Norse ones look cold and icy. I liked that I could jump between stories without finishing one, because my attention span is terrible. It also tracks your progress with little badges, which sounds dumb but I definitely spent extra time trying to unlock the “Lunar Scholar” badge. The interface is clean and I never got lost trying to find something.

Where It Falls Short

Okay so the first problem is storage. This app took up over 2GB on my iPhone 15 Pro after I downloaded just four myth packs. I had to delete some old photos to make room. The app also lags sometimes when you’re switching between stories, like a solid five-second freeze that makes you think it crashed. It didn’t crash on me, but it’s annoying. Another thing – the content is pretty overwhelming at first. There’s a map screen with like thirty different locations and no clear guide on where to start. I wish there was a “beginner path” or something instead of just throwing you into the world map. Also, some of the stories are way longer than others. The Inuit moon myth took me like forty minutes to get through, while the Roman one was done in ten. That’s fine, but I would’ve liked a time estimate so I could plan my study breaks better. Oh and the mini-games repeat a lot after a while. By the third story I was doing the same moon phase puzzle again.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free to download, which is honestly great because I’m broke. But here’s the catch – you start with only three stories available. To unlock the rest, you either play through mini-games to earn in-app currency or pay real money. The currency system isn’t terrible; I unlocked two extra stories by just playing the games for about an hour total. But if you want all the content, you’re looking at spending like $8 or grinding for days. For a student on a budget, I think the free content is solid enough to keep you busy for a week or two. I wouldn’t pay the full unlock price personally, but I can see someone who’s really into mythology or art deciding it’s worth it. The ads are pretty minimal – maybe one after every three stories, and they’re skippable after five seconds. That’s way better than most free apps I’ve used.

I actually had to reach out to support because one of the mini-games glitched on the Egyptian myth – the puzzle wouldn’t register my taps. I sent a message through the app’s help section on a Wednesday. I didn’t hear back until Sunday morning, which felt like forever because I was midway through the story and wanted to finish. When they did reply, the person was super nice and gave me a workaround (restart the story from the chapter select). They also said they’d credit me some in-app currency for the trouble, which I got two days later. So the response time is slow – like days, not hours – but the actual help was good. The app’s developer is StarFortune, and I looked them up – they seem to mostly make educational-ish apps, so this fits their vibe. I didn’t find much else about them online though.

Privacy & Safety

I’m not super paranoid about privacy, but I always check what permissions an app asks for. Myths of Moonrise only asked for storage access (for saving my progress) and network access (for the ads and updates). No camera, no contacts, no location. That’s pretty standard and I felt fine with it. The app does have a profile system where you can pick an avatar and username, but it’s optional and doesn’t ask for email unless you want to save progress across devices. I didn’t make an account, just used the guest mode, and it saved my progress locally. I read their privacy policy briefly – it says they collect analytics data like what stories you play and how long you spend, but nothing that identifies you personally. They also say they don’t sell your data to third parties, which is rare for a free app. For a student who doesn’t need their homework habits tracked, this felt safe enough.
