About myRAC

I’ve been an RAC member for a while, mostly for the peace of mind with two young kids in the car. When I saw the myRAC app, I thought it sounded perfect. I pictured myself tapping a button and calmly telling the kids help was on the way, with a little map to show them the van getting closer. I downloaded it on my OnePlus 11 about five weeks ago, mainly out of curiosity. I wanted to see if it was as simple and safe as it looked. After poking around and even using it for a minor issue, my initial hope has turned into real concern. For a parent, reliability is everything, and this app doesn’t feel solid enough to count on.

Features & Highlights

The app has the right boxes ticked on paper. You can request help, track the patrol, check fuel prices, and even store a photo of your driver’s license. I tried the document bit first, taking a picture of my license in my kitchen one Tuesday evening. That part worked fine and it’s a neat idea, so I don’t have to dig through my wallet. The fuel price finder is okay for a quick glance when you’re planning a longer trip to see the grandparents. But the main reason anyone gets this app is for the roadside help. That’s the feature that has to work every single time, no questions asked. From what I’ve experienced, it’s the most shaky part of the whole package. The extras are nice, but they don’t matter if the core promise falls apart.

User Experience

It just doesn’t feel smooth or simple. The menus are a bit of a maze. Last weekend, I tried to add our second car to the app. I tapped around for a good ten minutes before I found the right section. When I finally entered all the details, I hit save and… nothing happened. No “details updated” message, no checkmark. I had to go back in to see if it stuck. That’s annoying for everyday stuff. The real problem showed up when I used the breakdown assist feature for a flat battery in my driveway. I submitted the request okay, but the map screen was awful. The little patrol van icon just sat in one spot on the map, not moving at all for 45 minutes. I was literally in my own driveway, not even stressed, and it was frustrating. I can’t imagine how scary that would feel for my family if we were stranded on the side of the highway at night, watching a frozen icon. An app for emergencies should make you feel calmer, not more anxious.

Pricing

The app itself is free, which is good. But you need a paid RAC membership to use it. So really, you’re paying for the membership and the app is supposed to be a better way to access it. My issue is that if the app makes the service harder to use or less reliable, then it’s actually taking value away from my membership fee. I pay for safety and a quick response. When the app’s tracking glitches and leaves me in the dark, it feels like a broken part of the service I already bought. It’s not a free bonus if it doesn’t work properly.

Updates & Support

I haven’t had to call support myself, thankfully, because my test was at home. But I read the app store reviews, and a lot of people talk about having the same tracking problems I saw. That tells me it’s not just a one-off glitch on my phone. I’ve had a couple of updates pop up in the last month. The notes just said “general bug fixes,” but I didn’t notice anything get better. The interface still feels clunky and I’d bet the tracking is still unreliable. It doesn’t seem like the updates are tackling the big issues that members are actually complaining about.

Security & Privacy

This is a big one for me as a parent. The app asks for your location, which makes sense for sending help. It also stores your personal and vehicle details. I didn’t see any obvious red flags, and being from the RAC, you’d hope they take it seriously. But the overall bugginess of the app makes me a little nervous. If they can’t get the basic map function right, it makes you wonder about the behind-the-scenes stuff too. I uploaded my license, but the app’s general unreliability doesn’t inspire extra confidence that my data is being handled flawlessly.

Frequently asked questions
What features does the myRAC app offer besides roadside assistance?

The app lets you request help, track the patrol van on a map, check fuel prices, and store a photo of your driver's license for quick access. These extras are handy for planning trips or keeping documents handy, but the core roadside help feature is the main draw.

How does the breakdown assist feature work in the myRAC app?

You can submit a request for help directly through the app, and it shows a map with a patrol van icon that's supposed to move as the van gets closer. However, users have reported that the map icon can freeze in place for long periods, which undermines the sense of progress and reassurance you'd expect in an emergency.

Why is the myRAC app's map tracking so slow or unresponsive?

The map tracking often fails to update in real time, with the patrol van icon staying stuck in one spot for 45 minutes or more, even when help is on the way. This is a known glitch that can cause anxiety, especially if you're stranded and relying on the app for updates.

I can't save changes or add a car to the myRAC app. What should I do?

This is a common issue where tapping save doesn't show a confirmation message, leaving you unsure if the details were stored. A workaround is to navigate away and then back into the section to check if the changes stuck, but RAC needs to fix this lack of feedback for a smoother experience.

How does the myRAC app compare to the NRMA app for roadside assistance?

Both apps offer help requests and patrol tracking, but the NRMA app generally has a more reliable real-time map and smoother menu navigation. The myRAC app's frozen tracking and confusing menus make it less dependable for families who need calm and clarity during a breakdown.
