I downloaded Minion Rush because my colleague Dave kept talking about how his kid loved it. I figured, fine, I’ll give it a shot on my Samsung Galaxy A54. I’ve been running as Bob the Minion for a few months now, mostly on lunch breaks or when I’m waiting for laundry to finish. The movement feels smooth enough — swipe left, right, jump, slide. It’s simple. The environments are bright and silly, which I appreciate after a long day. I remember one Thursday afternoon around 3 PM I actually managed to beat my personal best of 1.2 million points while sitting in my car before a dentist appointment. That felt good. But honestly? I expected a simple game, and what I got is a game that keeps begging me to spend time on events I don’t care about. The core loop of collecting bananas and avoiding obstacles is fine. The new costumes from the movie updates are cute. But there’s a layer of grind here that feels less like fun and more like homework after a while. Still, for a free game, it does what it says. Just don’t expect it to respect your attention span or your privacy.

Features Worth Noting

The customization is probably the biggest hook. You can dress up your Minion in dozens of costumes, from a firefighter outfit to a pirate look. Some of them give you special powers, like a shield or a magnet for bananas. That part is genuinely fun. The levels change up too — you start in Gru’s Lab, then move to a beach, a haunted house, even a space station. They throw in special events tied to holidays or movie releases, which keeps things from getting totally stale. There’s also a “Despicable Me” mode where you play as Gru and zap things, but I barely touched that. The graphics are sharp on my Galaxy A54, no lag issues. Sound design is classic Minion gibberish and silly sound effects. My wife rolled her eyes when she heard it from the other room. But here’s what gets me: they push a notifications system way too hard. “Come back for your daily reward!” “New costume available!” “Event ends in 2 hours!” I had to turn most of them off. The social leaderboard feature ties into Facebook, which I’ll never touch. That’s a hard pass from me.

What Needs Work

The biggest problem is the monetization structure. It feels designed to frustrate you into spending money. You’ll hit a wall in certain levels where you need a specific power-up that you either grind for days or pay for. I don’t mind a game asking for money, but the way it’s done here feels manipulative. The ads are everywhere too. After every single run, you get a full-screen video ad. Sometimes two. You can pay to remove them, but that’s another purchase. The gameplay itself can get repetitive after about a week. It’s the same obstacles, same patterns, just different backgrounds. My support experience, for what it’s worth, was decent — I had an issue where my progress didn’t save after an update. I contacted them through their website, got a human response after three days, and they fixed it. That’s fair. But the loading times on my A54 are a bit long, especially when the game syncs with their servers. And one time the app crashed during a 500,000-point run. I nearly threw my phone.

Pricing

The game is free to download, but don’t be fooled. There are in-app purchases ranging from $0.99 to $49.99. You can buy banana crates, costume bundles, and power-up packs. There’s also a monthly subscription for $4.99 that gives you daily rewards and removes ads. I’ve spent $0 total. It’s possible to play without paying, but it’s slower. You’ll watch a lot of ads for extra bananas. They also push a “VIP” package for $19.99 that I ignored. Honestly, the pricing feels like a mobile game from 2015. Lots of microtransactions, very aggressive. If you have a kid who plays this, set up parental controls. The game will ask them to buy things constantly.

Developer Notes

Gameloft is a big company, and it shows. The game updates regularly with new events and costumes. They’re clearly supporting it. But the updates also add more ways to spend money. The app size is around 200MB on my phone, with extra downloads for content packs. It requires Android 5.0 or higher. I haven’t seen any major bugs since that one crash. The offline mode works, but you lose access to events and store features. So you’re always pushed to be online. The developer has a privacy policy link right in the app, which I actually read. That’s rare, and I’ll talk about that next.

Security & Privacy

Here’s where I get suspicious. The app asks for permission to access photos, media, and files on my device. Why? I’m running as a Minion. It also wants to read my device ID and call information. For a running game. That’s excessive. I denied those permissions and the app still works, but some features like sharing screenshots might be limited. I checked the privacy policy. Gameloft collects your IP address, device type, operating system, and how you play the game. They also share data with third-party ad networks. That’s standard for free games, but it’s not great. They use analytics from companies like Unity and Adjust. They also have a section about selling data for “business purposes.” I flagged that. California users have opt-out rights, but it’s buried in the policy. My advice: use a VPN if you care. I do. This app is a data vacuum disguised as a cute runner.
