First Impression

I hate ads, I hate apps that feel like they’re designed to trick you into subscriptions, and I really hate when a game wants access to my photos or microphone. But after deleting my third hidden object app in a row because of sketchy permission requests, I finally caved and paid for Hidden Through Time. My first thought was relief — no login screen, no “allow notifications?” pop-up, just a title screen and a menu. That alone felt like a win. I started playing on a Tuesday evening while waiting for my laundry to finish, and I didn’t stop until I heard the buzzer go off twice. The hint system is fair too — you earn hints by finding objects, so you never feel forced to buy anything. I’ve been playing for over a year now, and the developer keeps adding new levels through updates. The level editor is a nice bonus. I spent a Saturday afternoon building a treasure hunt for my niece, and she actually finished it and asked for another one. That felt good. The multiplayer mode exists but I don’t use it much — I’m more of a solo player. Still, it’s there if you want to race a friend.

Where It Falls Short

Let’s be honest — the gameplay can get repetitive. After fifty levels, you start recognizing patterns. The objects are always hidden in similar ways: behind a bush, inside a house, blended into a crowd. I wish some levels required more creative thinking instead of just pixel hunting. The controls can also be finicky on a smaller screen. On my iPhone 15 Pro, sometimes I tap an object three times before the game registers it, especially if it’s a tiny item like a thimble or a key. The game should clearly label that these purchases are 100% optional, which it does, but the store is always one tap away from the main menu.

Is It Worth the Price?

Yes, but only if you like this type of game. Hidden Through Time costs a few bucks upfront with no subscription. For that price, you get dozens of hand-crafted levels, a level editor, regular updates, and zero ads. That’s rare in mobile gaming. I’ve paid more for a coffee that I finished in five minutes. This game has given me hours of quiet entertainment during train rides, lunch breaks, and lazy Sunday mornings. I don’t regret the purchase. That said, if you hate hidden object games or you’re looking for something action-packed, this won’t change your mind. But for what it is — a calm, creative, respectful puzzle game — the price feels fair. I would have appreciated a free demo level to try first, but the reviews convinced me to take the risk.

I contacted support once because one of my saved levels from the level editor disappeared after an update. I sent an email on a Friday and didn’t hear back until the following Wednesday, which was annoying. But when they did reply, the person was actually helpful. They gave me clear instructions to restore the level from a backup and even apologized for the delay. I appreciated that they didn’t use a generic copy-paste response. The developer, Rogueside, seems active. They release updates every few months with new content and bug fixes. The community around the game is small but nice — people share their custom levels on forums, and some are genuinely clever. I haven’t seen any drama or toxic behavior, which is refreshing.

Privacy & Safety

This is where I get picky. I checked the privacy policy before downloading, and it’s refreshingly short. The game collects no personal data, no location, no contacts, no browsing history. It doesn’t even ask for an account. The only data involved is basic crash reports and analytics, which is standard for any app. You can play entirely offline, and I often do when I’m on the subway without service. No tracking networks, no ads serving my data to third parties. For a paid app, this is exactly what I expect, but it’s still rare enough that I feel the need to praise it. I wish every game was this upfront. The only concern is that the level editor lets you share levels with a community, and those levels could theoretically contain inappropriate content since they’re user-made.
