My Experience with Loop — Business TV and Signage

This app is supposedly for small business owners who need a simple, cheap way to put stuff on a TV screen. That’s me to a T. I run a little coffee shop and my buddy Mark said he used Loop for his bar’s drink menus. Sounded perfect. I downloaded it on my OnePlus 11, hooked it up to the old Samsung behind my counter, and figured I’d be showing off my amazing latte art in no time. A year later, I’m back to using a Google Slides tab on a cheap Chromebook. My breaking point was last Tuesday morning. I’d set a playlist with the day’s soup and sandwich special to start at 7 AM. I walked in at 6:45, turned on the TV, and… nothing. Just a black screen. I had to unplug the fire stick, restart my phone, and log back into the app while customers were already lining up. It felt amateur hour. For an app that’s entire job is to show things on a screen, failing at that basic task is a deal-breaker.

Features Worth Noting

I’ll give credit where it’s due. The idea of managing the screen from my phone while I’m running around the cafe is brilliant. On the rare occasions it worked, I could quickly swap out an image from the back office if we ran out of banana bread. They also have a genuinely free tier, which is why I stuck with it so long. I’m the type of person who will squeeze every last drop of value from a free plan before even thinking about paying. The app itself gets updated pretty often, which at least shows the developers haven’t completely abandoned it. The template library has a bunch of pre-made layouts, which is helpful if you’re starting from zero and just need something, anything, up on the screen fast.

What Needs Work

Everything else, honestly. The stability is a joke. Playlists would randomly stop, videos would play silently, and the app on my phone would constantly lose connection to the TV player. Building a playlist should be drag-and-drop easy, but the interface lagged so badly it was like moving through syrup. Trying to line up my daily specials with specific times was an exercise in frustration. The worst part was the support. After the third black screen incident, I finally emailed them. The response took four days and was a copy-pasted paragraph about checking my internet connection and making sure the TV was on the right HDMI input. No kidding. I felt totally brushed off. If you’re selling a tool to businesses, you need to be there when it breaks.

Pricing

Here’s the trap. The free version slaps a huge, ugly “Loop” watermark on everything you show. It looks terrible and completely unprofessional. To remove it and get basic features like scheduling—which barely worked for me—you have to pay. After a year of wrestling with the free version, there is zero chance I’d ever give them my credit card. Why would I pay a monthly fee for software that can’t perform its core function reliably? For what they charge, I could almost get a dedicated, rock-solid signage service. Loop feels like a demo you’d tolerate, not a tool you’d buy.

Developer Notes

Like I said, they update the app. I see the notifications on my phone. But reading the update notes is frustrating. It’s always the same vague line: “General bug fixes and performance improvements.” After 12 months, the same bugs that annoyed me at the start are still there. It makes me wonder what they’re actually fixing. Are they adding new bells and whistles while the foundation is still cracked? The constant updates without any noticeable improvement in the day-to-day headaches started to feel more like a bad sign than a good one.

Security & Privacy

The app asks for a lot of permissions right off the bat. It needs access to media files, which makes sense, but also wants to run at startup and have broad network access. I’m not a security expert, but it always gives me pause when an app wants that much control. Their privacy policy is a long legal document, and I didn’t see any major red flags in a quick scan, but I’m always cautious about what a “free” service does with my data. I uploaded photos of my food and business info, so I hope it’s staying put.

Frequently asked questions
Can I manage my TV signage directly from my phone with Loop?

Yes, Loop lets you control your TV screen from your phone, which is handy for quick updates like swapping out a sold-out item. Just keep in mind that the connection between your phone and the TV player can be unstable, so it might not always work when you need it most.

Does Loop offer a free tier, and what features are included?

Loop has a genuinely free tier, which includes access to a template library with pre-made layouts. However, the free version puts a large, unprofessional watermark on your content, and basic features like scheduling require a paid subscription.

Why does my Loop playlist keep stopping or showing a black screen?

This is a common complaint—playlists can randomly stop, and black screens happen often due to stability issues. Try restarting your phone, unplugging your streaming device, and re-logging into the app, but if it keeps happening, you may need to consider a more reliable solution.

How do I fix Loop losing connection between my phone and the TV?

The app frequently loses connection to the TV player, and support usually just tells you to check your internet and HDMI input. Restarting both your phone and the TV device can help temporarily, but this is a known problem that Loop hasn't fully resolved.

How does Loop compare to using a Google Slides tab on a Chromebook for signage?

Many users, like the reviewer, end up switching to Google Slides on a Chromebook because it's more reliable—no random black screens or connection drops. While Loop offers phone control and templates, the stability issues make a simple slideshow a safer bet for daily business use.
