My Experience with Google One

I switched to Google One because my old backup app kept crashing halfway through saving my photos. That was last November, and I was staring at a full phone memory warning on my Samsung Galaxy A54 while trying to snap holiday decorations. I also kept getting those annoying “your Drive storage is full” emails right when I needed to share a file for work. Google One just works. It quietly backs up my contacts and photos in the background without me having to remember to do it. One Tuesday morning I woke up to find it had saved 34 blurry cat pictures I’d forgotten about. That sold me. The free 15GB was enough to test it for a few weeks before I decided to trust it with my bigger files. Now I know my phone won’t die on me if I drop it in a puddle.

Features Worth Noting

The automatic phone backup is the main reason I kept the app. I set it once and forgot about it. It backs up my photos, videos, and contacts when I’m on Wi-Fi, and it doesn’t nag me about it. The storage management tool is also handy — it shows you exactly what’s eating up space, like old WhatsApp backups or duplicate photos. I freed up 4GB just by deleting stuff I didn’t need anymore. The family sharing option is cool too. My sister used it to share her 100GB plan with me for a bit, and it didn’t cost me anything extra. The discounts on hotels and Google products are there, but honestly I haven’t used them because I’m cheap and I check other sites first. The Google expert support feature sounds fancy, but I never needed to call them, so I can’t vouch for it. One small thing I like is the storage usage bar on the main screen — it shows green, yellow, or red so I know at a glance if I’m getting close to the limit.

What Needs Work

First, the app can be slow sometimes. When I open it to check storage, it takes a good 4-5 seconds to load the dashboard on my Galaxy A54. That’s not the end of the world, but it’s annoying when I’m in a hurry. Second, the interface for managing storage feels cluttered. There are too many tabs and recommendations popping up — I just want to see my usage and maybe delete old files, not get suggestions to buy more storage every time. Third, the free tier doesn’t give you much warning before you hit the limit. I got a sudden “out of storage” error in Gmail one afternoon, and I had to scramble to clear things out. A better alert system would be nice, like a notification when you’re at 80% instead of 99%. Also, I wish the app let me choose which folders to back up manually, because it backs up everything automatically and sometimes I don’t need random screenshots saved.

Pricing

Google One is basically a subscription for more space. The free 15GB is fine for light users, but I hit that limit after two months of regular photo taking. The cheapest paid plan is 100GB for about $1.99 a month. I tried that for a month and it felt reasonable since it covers Drive, Gmail, and Photos all together. Unlike some other cloud services, there’s no hidden setup fee or extra charges for family sharing — up to five people can use the same storage without paying more. The 200GB plan is $2.99, and the 2TB plan is $9.99. For a budget-conscious person like me, the 100GB plan is the sweet spot. I calculated that it costs less than a coffee per month, and it saves me from buying an external hard drive or losing photos. But I do wish there was a middle option between 100GB and 200GB, because sometimes I’m close to the limit but not quite ready to jump to the next tier.

Developer Notes

Google LLC updates the app every few months, and I’ve noticed small improvements over time. The storage notifications got more detailed after one update, and the backup speed seemed faster after another. That said, it still feels like a basic tool rather than something flashy. I wish they’d add a simple “one-click clean” button to clear out large, old files without having to dig through menus. Also, the app sometimes tries to push me to buy more storage even when I’m not close to the limit — that’s a bit annoying. On the positive side, the app hasn’t crashed on me once in eight months, which is more than I can say for some other Google apps. The developers seem to focus on stability rather than adding unnecessary bells and whistles, which I appreciate.

Security & Privacy

Since it’s Google, my data is stored on their servers with encryption both in transit and at rest. I don’t love that Google can technically access my files for things like AI training (I read the privacy policy during a boring Sunday afternoon), but you can disable that in your account settings. The app itself asks for permissions to access photos, contacts, and storage, which makes sense for a backup tool. I use two-factor authentication on my Google account, so I feel reasonably safe. That said, if you’re paranoid about privacy, you might want to use something like a local backup to a hard drive instead. For me, the convenience of automatic backups outweighs the privacy concerns — I’m not storing state secrets, just pictures of my dog and some work documents. One thing I like is that deleted files go to a trash folder for 30 days, so I can recover them if I accidentally erase something important.
