Google Meet Mobile App Review

About Google Meet

As someone who shifted to remote work a few years back, I’ve tried my fair share of video conferencing apps. Google Meet is the one that’s stuck. It’s the default for my team because it’s straightforward and integrates perfectly with the Google ecosystem we already use. I’m reviewing the mobile app specifically, which is how I join calls when I’m away from my laptop.

Features & Highlights

The killer feature for me is the Google Calendar integration. When a meeting invite pops up in my calendar, I can join with one tap on my phone—no hunting for links or codes. The live captions are a game-changer during noisy commutes or when someone’s audio is cutting out; I’ve caught crucial details I would have missed otherwise. Screen sharing from my phone is surprisingly smooth for quick demos, and the background blur option saves me from having a panic attack about my messy home office when I join unexpectedly. I also appreciate the “dial-in” number option for when my data signal is terrible but I can still get an old-school phone connection.

User Experience

The app is clean and intuitive. I remember the first time I used it, I was in a cab and got a “meeting starting now” notification. I tapped it, and within 10 seconds I was in the call with my video off and mic muted—exactly how I wanted to join. The controls are right where you expect them. A specific moment that sold me was when my Wi-Fi dropped during a client presentation. The app seamlessly (and I use that word sparingly) switched to my cellular data without dropping the call. The mobile layout is smart, prioritizing the active speaker and making the chat or participant list easy to access without cluttering the screen.

Pricing

For the vast majority of users, Google Meet is completely free. You can host hour-long meetings with up to 100 participants at no cost. I’ve never hit a paywall for my personal or small-team use. If you need longer meetings (24 hours), more participants (up to 500), and features like recording saved to Drive, you’ll need a Google Workspace plan. For my needs and likely yours, the free tier is more than worth it—it’s genuinely full-featured.

Updates & Support

Google updates the app regularly, often adding useful tweaks like improved noise cancellation or new layout options. I don’t notice major, disruptive overhauls, which I prefer. As for support, since it’s a free app, there’s no direct phone line. I’ve used the in-app help and community forums a couple of times for niche issues, and found solutions there. For widespread outages, you’re reliant on Google’s status pages, which is pretty standard for a free service.

Security & Privacy

I always download it directly from the official Google Play Store. Google encrypts Meet data in transit and states that meeting content is not used for advertising. For the security-conscious, it’s reassuring to know you can create meetings with complex codes and use features like “knocking” for entry approval. As with any Google service, they do collect diagnostic and usage data, which is outlined in their privacy policy. I haven’t encountered any ads within the Meet app itself.

Frequently asked questions
How do I join a Google Meet call directly from my phone?

If you have a Google Calendar meeting invite, you can join with one tap from the event notification or the app itself—no link or code needed. Just make sure you're signed into the same Google account used for the invite.

Can I use live captions on the Google Meet mobile app?

Yes, live captions are available during meetings and can be turned on from the controls menu. This is especially helpful in noisy environments or when audio cuts out, so you don't miss important details.

What should I do if my Wi-Fi drops during a Google Meet call on mobile?

The app will automatically try to switch to your cellular data without dropping the call, as long as your mobile data is enabled. For a more stable connection, you can also dial in using the provided phone number if your data signal is weak.

Why can't I see the 'Join' button for a meeting even though it's on my calendar?

Make sure you're signed into the same Google account that received the calendar invite, and that the Google Meet app has notification permissions enabled. If the issue persists, try force-closing the app and reopening it, or manually open the calendar event to find the join link.

How does Google Meet compare to Zoom for mobile use?

Google Meet is simpler and more tightly integrated with Google Calendar and Gmail, making it easier to join calls without extra steps. While Zoom offers more advanced features like breakout rooms, Meet's mobile app stands out for its seamless switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data, which is a lifesaver on the go.
