I’m retired and spend a lot of time going through old photos on my Samsung Galaxy A54. My previous gallery app started showing ads every time I opened it and then it just stopped opening altogether. I don’t have the patience for that nonsense. I found Gallery Pro – Photos & Videos in the Play Store and figured I’d try a paid app for once since free ones kept letting me down. It’s been a little over a month now and I’m mostly happy. The app does what it says on the tin – it shows me my pictures and videos without getting in my way. I like that I can see everything sorted by date or by album. My daughter helped me set it up the first day and she said it looked clean. I agree. There’s no clutter on the screen, just my photos. That’s really all I wanted. The developer calls it Picture Gallery App and I think that name fits because that’s exactly what it is. Nothing more, nothing less.

Core Features

This app has a bunch of features I didn’t think I’d use but actually do now. The biggest thing for me is the search function. Last Tuesday I was looking for a photo from my grandson’s birthday party back in June. I typed “birthday” into the search bar and it found all the photos with birthday in the name or the date. Saved me from scrolling through hundreds of pictures. I also use the album feature a lot. I made separate albums for family trips, holidays, and my garden photos. It’s easy to create a new album – just tap a button and pick the photos you want. The edit tools are basic but good enough for me. I can crop a photo, adjust the brightness if it’s too dark, and add a simple filter if I’m feeling fancy. My wife likes the slideshow feature. On Sunday mornings we sit on the couch and let the app run through our vacation photos. There’s also a secure vault thing where you can lock certain photos with a password. I haven’t used it much but my neighbor said she uses it for private documents she scans with her phone.

Real-World Use

I use Gallery Pro every single day, usually in the afternoon after lunch when I have nothing else to do. The app opens fast on my A54, which surprised me because some apps take forever on this phone. Scrolling through photos is smooth – no stuttering or freezing like my old app. I take a lot of pictures of my rose bushes in the backyard, about three or four a week to track their growth. The app keeps them organized by date so I can see the progress week by week. My one frustration is the video playback. When I try to watch a video my son sent me from his iPhone, it sometimes plays with no sound or the video is choppy. I have to close the app and reopen it to fix it. That happened twice last week and it annoyed me. On the plus side, sharing photos is simple. I just tap the share button and choose my daughter’s phone number or my wife’s email. It works every time without fuss. I also like that I can zoom in on photos with two fingers because my eyes aren’t what they used to be.

Pricing & Value

This app costs money, which I was nervous about because you never know if it’ll be worth it. I paid around five dollars for it, I think. Honestly, that’s less than a sandwich and a coffee at the diner. My old free app had ads every two minutes and eventually broke. This one has no ads at all and has worked perfectly for over a month. I call that good value. My only worry is that I paid once and sometimes these apps stop getting updates after a while. But so far, so good. For someone like me who just wants to look at photos without being sold something or having the app crash, it’s money well spent. I’d rather pay five bucks now than deal with free apps that drive me crazy.

Updates & Support

I haven’t needed to contact support because the app works fine for me. But I did look at the reviews in the Play Store before buying, which is something I always do. Most people seem happy. A few complained about bugs with videos or the vault not locking properly. I haven’t had those issues except the video thing I mentioned. I got one update about two weeks after I downloaded the app. It didn’t change much, just said “bug fixes and improvements.” The app still looks the same to me. I wish the developer would add a simple folder view so I can see my photos sorted by the folders they came from, like downloads or screenshots. Right now it just shows everything mixed together unless I make albums myself. That’s a small complaint though.

Data & Privacy

I don’t understand all that data and privacy stuff. The app asks for permission to access my photos and storage, which makes sense because it’s a gallery app. It also asks for camera permission if I want to take photos from inside the app. I said yes. My daughter told me to check what data they collect, so I looked at the privacy policy link in the app settings. It seemed to say they don’t collect personal info or sell your data. I hope that’s true because I have a lot of family photos in there. The vault feature seems secure enough with a password, though I haven’t put anything sensitive in there. Overall, I feel safe using it but I’m not an expert.
