Developer Notes

The developer seems to update the app regularly. I saw a version update in my download history from two weeks ago. The interface feels modern and not abandoned. They don’t spam you with notifications either. I got one alert when the video was ready and that was it. No “come back” nonsense. I appreciate that. The app also uses standard phone permissions. It asked for camera and storage access, which I granted because I wanted to save the video. But you can use the app without giving those permissions if you just want to browse. Also, there’s no forced account linking to social media. I used my email and password. That felt respectful. I’ve seen too many apps that try to scrape your contacts. Cameo didn’t do that. They do have a referral program where you get credit if someone signs up using your link. I haven’t tried it yet. My only complaint about the developer is that their support team is clearly understaffed. A weekend delay for a name fix is too long for a paid service. They need a live chat or a faster ticketing system.

Security & Privacy

This was my biggest concern as a parent. I didn’t want my daughter’s name floating around some random server. The payment went through securely, no issues. I checked my bank after and there were no extra charges. The app has a privacy policy that’s readable, not a wall of legal nonsense. They say they don’t sell your personal info to third parties. But they also say they use data to improve the app, which is vague. I assume they track what you search for and who you request. That’s pretty standard. The video itself is stored in the app and you can download it. I don’t know if the celebrity keeps a copy. That information isn’t clear. I also noticed you can request a video anonymously if you want, but then the celebrity won’t say the recipient’s name. That defeats the point. For my family, I felt safe enough. I wouldn’t let a child under 13 use the app unsupervised, though. The browsing section includes celebrities who post content that might not be kid-friendly. The app itself is rated for ages 12 and up in the store, which feels right. I’d recommend parents preview the celebrity list first before letting a kid loose on it.
