The layers thing really surprised me. I didn’t think I’d ever use it, but now I’ll put a picture-in-picture of my son’s face reacting to the roller coaster while the main video plays. It’s easy to drag stuff around. The trimming is super precise too—you can zoom into the timeline and cut exactly where you want, which sounds basic but a lot of apps make that way harder than it should be. Another thing I love is the speed control. My oldest daughter was dancing at her recital and I slowed it down to look dramatic and it actually came out smooth, not choppy like some other apps I’ve tried. There’s also a voice changer that my kids think is hilarious. They record their own commentary over videos and I can make them sound like chipmunks or robots. The app comes with a bunch of premade transition effects that don’t look cheap. I use the dissolve one a lot. Also the color filters are decent. I’m not a pro so I just scroll through until one makes the video look less boring. It works for me.

Daily Use Experience

I use this app maybe twice a week, usually on lazy Sunday afternoons while coffee is still warm. Opening my Samsung Galaxy A54 and hopping into KineMaster is pretty routine now. The app loads fast most days. There was one time last month where I had a project with five layers and about twenty minutes of footage and the preview started stuttering. That was annoying. I had to close everything and restart my phone. But for the short videos I usually make—under two minutes for Instagram or just for family group chats—it runs totally fine. The interface looks busy at first honestly. There are icons everywhere. But after messing around for maybe half an hour you start to memorize where things are. I still accidentally hit the wrong button sometimes and undo a bunch of work. That’s my own fault though. The export takes a while if you pick the highest quality but the standard 1080p at 30fps is good enough for me and it exports in maybe a minute or two. I’ve never had it crash during export which is more than I can say for some other apps I’ve tried and deleted.

Cost Breakdown

It’s free to download but you get a little watermark on everything unless you subscribe. I tried to ignore the watermark for about a week but it’s big and obvious right in the corner. It drove me crazy. So I caved and got the monthly subscription for like four or five dollars. That removes the watermark and unlocks all the premium assets like extra stickers, music, and fonts. I kept the monthly plan for a couple months then switched to the yearly one because it’s cheaper per month. I think I pay something like forty bucks a year now. Is it worth it? For me yes because I actually use it regularly enough. But if you only make one video for a Christmas card or something, the free version with the watermark might be fine. Or you could just crop the watermark out in another app which I’ve definitely done before in a pinch. There’s no lifetime purchase option which I wish they’d add. That would make me feel better about paying.

Support Experience

I never actually contacted support because the app worked fine for me after I got over the initial learning phase. But I did read through a bunch of app store reviews when I was deciding whether to subscribe. I saw some people complaining that support took days to respond to issues with purchases or lost projects. That made me nervous but I didn’t have any billing problems myself. One time my project didn’t save properly and I lost like ten minutes of editing. That was probably my fault for closing the app without hitting save. The autosave feature exists but I don’t fully trust it. So now I manually save every few minutes. If you’re someone who runs into bugs a lot, you might have a bad time. But for a casual user like me who mostly does simple edits, I didn’t need to talk to anyone.

Privacy Verdict

This app asks for a ton of permissions. Storage, microphone, camera. I get why for editing but it still made me pause. The developer says they collect data like device info and usage stats for improving the app. I’m not thrilled about that but honestly every free app does the same thing. I checked their privacy policy once and it seemed standard enough. They don’t sell your videos or anything creepy as far as I could tell. I keep my phone’s location permission off for this app and it still works fine. If you’re super private about your media maybe think twice because the app does need access to your files. For me, it’s a trade-off I’m okay with since I’m not editing anything sensitive. Just goofy family stuff.
