I got this app a few months ago on my OnePlus 11 because I kept seeing cool little animations pop up on TikTok and Instagram and thought “hey, I could probably do that.” Before FlipaClip, I was using a random free animation app that kept crashing every time I added more than five frames. That was a total buzzkill. With FlipaClip, I was actually able to finish a full 10-second loop of a stick figure doing a backflip last Tuesday night while waiting for my laundry. It felt good. The app is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of the layers. But I gotta be honest — I tried contacting support about an issue where my brush size kept resetting randomly, and it took them like four days to reply with a vague “try resetting the app.” That was annoying. I’m not a techy person, I just want to draw and have it work. Still, for a free app, it does the job better than anything else I tried on my phone.

Features Worth Noting

The onion skinning feature is the main reason I stuck with this app. It shows you a faint ghost of the previous frame so you can actually make your movements look smooth instead of jerky. My first stick figure looked like it was having a seizure before I figured that out. The layering system is also solid — I can draw the background on one layer, keep the character on another, and not mess up everything when I tweak a tiny thing. That saved me from rage-quitting more than once. There’s a timeline at the bottom that feels like mini video editing software, which sounds intimidating but honestly it’s just a bar you tap and drag. You can add audio too — I threw in a silly beat from my music library to test it out. It synced up okay, though I had to fiddle with the timing a bit. The brush selection isn’t massive, but it has enough variety (pencil, pen, marker, airbrush) to make my doodles look less like a kindergartner’s and more like a middle schooler’s.

What Needs Work

Here’s where it gets frustrating. The free version is very limited — you only get a few layers and basic brushes, and every time you try to access something fancy like the stabilizer or extra layer slots, it pushes you to pay. I get it, they gotta make money, but the pop-ups feel pushy after a while. The app also lags on my OnePlus 11 when I have more than 15 frames with a few layers each. The screen freezes for a split second during playback, which ruins the flow. And that support issue I mentioned? The brush reset glitch happened again after I did what they said, so I gave up. Also, exporting the video can be a pain — it saves in this weird resolution by default that looks stretched on some social media platforms. I had to Google a workaround. It’s not terrible, but if you’re expecting a pro tool, this isn’t it.

Pricing

It’s free to download and mess around with, which is great. But to unlock the full experience — like unlimited layers, more frame rates, and no watermarks — you need the premium upgrade. It costs like $6.99 a month or a one-time purchase that I think is around $30? I didn’t buy it because I can’t justify spending that on a hobby I do in my pajamas. The free version is fine for simple animations, but if you want to make anything serious, you’ll probably cave and pay. That feels fair honestly, but I wish they showed the exact price upfront instead of hiding it in menus after you hit “try premium” five times.

Developer Notes

Visual Blasters updates the app fairly often — I’ve seen a couple of patches pop up since I installed it. One update actually fixed a bug where my drawings would disappear for a second, but then introduced the brush reset issue. So it’s a mixed bag. They seem active on their social media, posting user animations and tips. But the support team is slow and their responses feel scripted. I’m not mad, just disappointed. It feels like they focus more on adding new stickers and filters than fixing core stability problems. If they spent a month just smoothing out the lag on Android devices, I’d probably recommend this to all my friends.

Security & Privacy

Honestly, I didn’t think about privacy much. The app asks for storage permissions to save your projects, which makes sense. It doesn’t bug me for my location or contacts or anything creepy. There’s no forced account creation — you can use it as a guest, which I appreciate. If you want to share your animations on their community tab, you’ll need to sign up with an email. I haven’t done that because I don’t need strangers critiquing my stick figure backflip. Overall, it feels like a normal app that just wants to see your drawings, not your personal life. That’s a win.
