First Impression

I downloaded EZVIZ about a year ago after seeing someone mention it in a home security group on Reddit. I was honestly just curious because I’d been looking for cameras to watch my front door after packages kept disappearing. My Samsung S23 handled the setup fine, which was good because I wasn’t about to spend money on anything without testing it first. The app asks you to create an account immediately, which annoyed me slightly because I prefer to poke around before committing. After that, adding my first camera was pretty straightforward—it uses QR code scanning and a beep to confirm connection. I remember setting it up on a Tuesday evening around 8 PM, and within maybe 20 minutes I had a live feed of my porch showing the neighbor’s cat walking by. The interface is clean enough, not cluttered with ads or weird pop-ups asking for money right away. That surprised me in a good way.

What It Does Well

The core stuff works reliably for me. Live streaming loads fast on Wi-Fi, and the video quality is decent for a budget camera setup—I can read license plates if a car pulls into my driveway during the day. Night vision is okay too, not amazing but good enough to see if someone’s lurking around. The two-way audio actually works; I’ve used it to yell at delivery drivers who leave packages in the rain, and they can hear me clearly. Motion detection alerts come through on my phone within seconds, and you can customize the sensitivity so you don’t get a notification every time a tree branch moves. I especially like the event timeline feature—it records short clips when motion is detected, and I can scroll back through my day to see what happened at 3 AM when the trash truck came. The free cloud storage gives you 24 hours of rolling clips, which I honestly thought would be useless but turned out fine for basic peace of mind. I also appreciate that the app doesn’t bug me to upgrade constantly. There’s a tiny badge showing cloud storage used, but it’s not in your face.

Where It Falls Short

Okay, here’s where my frugal side gets annoyed. The 24-hour free cloud storage is nice, but if you want to keep clips longer than a day, you have to pay. And the subscription isn’t cheap—around $7 a month for 30-day storage on one camera. Multiply that by multiple cameras and it adds up fast. I use a microSD card in my camera for local recording, which works, but the app’s playback for local recordings is clunky. It takes forever to load older footage, and the timeline is hard to scrub through. Sometimes I just give up trying to find something. Also, the app can be slow to load if my Wi-Fi is struggling—like when my whole family is streaming at once. The lag during live view can be a solid 2-3 seconds, which feels like forever when you’re watching someone approach your door. And another thing: I had one instance where the app logged me out for no reason and I had to reset my password. That was annoying and happened around 11 PM when I was half asleep. Support eventually helped, but it took four days for a reply. Not terrible, but not instant.

Is It Worth the Price?

The app itself is free to download, so there’s no risk in trying it. For someone like me who hates recurring costs, the free version is usable if you have local storage. I use a 128GB microSD card in my camera ($15 on Amazon) and that gives me weeks of continuous recording without paying a cent to EZVIZ. So value-wise, it’s great for that reason. But if you want the cloud features long-term, you’re looking at a subscription, and that’s where I’d hesitate. Compared to paying $30 a month for a Ring subscription, EZVIZ’s $7 for basic cloud is cheaper but still feels like nickeling-and-diming. I’d recommend this app to someone who’s willing to do a little DIY tech setup—pop in an SD card, fiddle with settings—because that’s how you avoid paying monthly. If you just want to plug, pay, and forget, maybe look at something else. For me, pairing free app plus cheap SD card makes it worth keeping.

Developer & Support

I only contacted support once, and it was about that random forced logout issue I mentioned. I filled out a form on their website, got an automated reply saying they’d get back to me, and then waited four days for an actual human. When the response came, it was polite and gave me clear steps to reset my credentials and re-link my camera. It worked, so I can’t complain too much. But four days is a long time if your security camera is down. I’d expect a quicker turnaround for something meant to protect your home. The support person was named “Jessica” according to the signature, so that felt slightly personal. The app itself gets updated occasionally—I’ve seen maybe three updates in the past year. Each one fixed some minor bugs and added a few tweaks. No major surprises.

Privacy & Safety

This is important to me because a camera in my home feels invasive if it’s not secure. EZVIZ requires a password with decent complexity, and they offer two-factor authentication via email. I turned that on immediately. The app asks for camera and microphone permissions, which makes sense for live view and audio. But it also requests location permissions “for optimal setup”—I denied that and everything still worked fine. Data encryption is mentioned in their privacy policy, but I’m not a tech expert so I can’t verify that. I will say I’ve never had suspicious activity or noticed the camera accessing my feed without me opening the app. The company is based in China, which gives some people pause. I’m aware of that but I’ve accepted the risk for a free app. If you’re ultra-paranoid, this might not be for you. For me, on a separate home Wi-Fi network with a password I change every few months, I feel okay about it.
