First Impression

I downloaded this for a long train commute last year, needing something to pass the time. Right away, the merging was satisfying. Dragging a little Leaf Sprite onto another one and watching it puff into a bigger, cooler creature had a nice feel to it. The art is cute, no doubt. But my privacy alarm bells went off during setup. The permissions list was longer than I expected for a simple merge game. It wanted access to my device’s advertising identifier right off the bat, which is a big red flag for tracking. I almost deleted it then, but I needed the distraction, so I figured I’d just be careful.

What It Does Well

The core gameplay loop is solid. There’s a real sense of discovery when you experiment with merges. I remember a rainy Sunday afternoon, I finally combined a Spark Fox and a Mud Golem I’d been saving. Getting a completely new Crackling Golem creature felt like a legit achievement. The daily tasks are manageable, usually taking me about 15 minutes with my morning coffee. The developers add new content fairly often; a winter event last December introduced some cool ice-themed monsters that were fun to chase. For a free game, the amount of stuff to do without immediately hitting a paywall is impressive.

Where It Falls Short

My biggest issue is the creeping monetization and the data hunger. After a few months, the “special offers” became more frequent and aggressive. A timer for a special breeding event would finish, and a flashy pop-up would immediately try to sell me a bundle to do it again. It starts to feel manipulative. More importantly, the privacy policy is a concern. I read it. They collect device info, purchase history, and “gameplay data” which they share with advertising and analytics partners. You can’t really opt out if you want to play. I noticed more targeted ads for other mobile games popping up on my social media after playing this heavily.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free, so you can try it without spending money. I never spent a cent and still unlocked a lot of content. The price you pay isn’t in dollars, it’s in your data and patience. The ads are “optional,” but they’re constantly presented as the solution to waiting. Want to speed up this hatch? Watch an ad. Need a few more gems for that merge? Watch an ad. It creates a friction where you’re always being nudged to trade your attention. For a casual, offline-friendly merge game, it feels unnecessarily connected and monetized.

Developer & Support

Go Dreams pushes updates regularly, which is good for new content but also means new ways to spend money or engage with events. I haven’t contacted support myself because I haven’t had a technical issue. Looking at the App Store reviews, it’s a mixed bag. Some people praise quick help with lost accounts, while others complain about tickets going unanswered for weeks regarding refunds. They seem responsive to bug reports but less so to complaints about game balance or pricing, which is pretty standard for these studios.

Privacy & Safety

This is the dealbreaker for me now. After a year, I’m uninstalling it. The app requires network access, which they say is for cloud saves and events. Fine. But it also uses that connection for extensive data collection outlined in their policy. It tracks your in-app purchases, your progress, how long you play, and likely what you tap on. This data is used for “personalized advertising.” There’s no way to play without accepting this. For a game about merging cute monsters, it operates like a sophisticated data harvest. I got it from the official App Store, so it’s not malware, but it’s a privacy trade-off I’m no longer comfortable with.

Frequently asked questions
What is the core gameplay loop in Elemental Monsters: Merge?

You merge identical creatures by dragging one onto another, which creates a stronger monster. Experimenting with different combinations unlocks new creatures, and daily tasks keep the progression steady without overwhelming you.

Does the game add new content regularly?

Yes, the developers release new monsters and events fairly often, like the winter event with ice-themed creatures. This keeps the game feeling fresh even after you've played for several months.

Why does the app ask for my advertising identifier and can I opt out?

The game uses your advertising identifier along with purchase history and gameplay data for targeted ads and analytics. Unfortunately, you cannot opt out of this data collection if you want to play, as it's tied to the core app permissions.

Are the special offers and pop-ups as aggressive as some reviews suggest?

Yes, after a few months the special offers become more frequent and pushy, with flashy pop-ups appearing right after timed events end. This can feel manipulative, but the game remains playable without paying if you ignore them.

How does Elemental Monsters: Merge compare to similar merge games like Merge Dragons?

Elemental Monsters has a more generous free-to-play experience with less immediate paywalling and frequent content updates. However, it is more aggressive with targeted ads and data collection, whereas Merge Dragons offers clearer opt-out options for tracking.
