First Impression

I downloaded Crossy Road about six weeks ago on my Samsung Galaxy S23 because my old go-to arcade game started crashing every two minutes. I was annoyed, running late for a Tuesday morning train, and just needed something to tap on while standing on platform 4. First tap? Fine. Second tap? My chicken got pancaked by a semi. I almost deleted it right there. But something about the blocky pixel style and that stupidly cheerful music made me try again. By the time my train arrived at Central Station, I had crossed 17 roads and died in a river. It’s not deep. It doesn’t pretend to be. And honestly, that’s exactly what I needed. No tutorial walls, no login screen begging for my email—just tap, hop, and die.

What It Does Well

The core loop is stupidly simple and that’s its superpower. You tap to move forward, swipe left or right to turn, and you dodge cars, logs, trains, and floating lily pads. It sounds boring written out, but when you’re actually playing, the timing feels tight and satisfying. I’ve sunk way more time into this than I’d like to admit during lunch breaks at my desk. The variety of characters is also a nice touch—I spent about an hour unlocking a little duck with a backpack, and my coworker Sarah thinks the hipster fox is hilarious. The pixel art isn’t flashy, but it’s charming and runs perfectly smooth on my S23, even in the multiplayer mode where you split the screen and race a friend. That multiplayer part actually saved a dull Friday evening when my internet was down. You don’t need Wi-Fi for it, which is a big deal for commuters like me. The daily challenges give you a reason to come back, but they’re not pushy about it. No “you missed yesterday!” guilt trips. I respect that.

Where It Falls Short

Let’s be real—this game gets repetitive. Like, really repetitive. After a few weeks, the core gameplay loop of “tap forward, dodge car, hop on log, die to a train you didn’t see” starts feeling like Groundhog Day. The environments change a little (forest, river, city), but the obstacles behave the same way no matter where you are. I found myself zoning out completely, dying the same way at the same distance over and over. Also, the ad situation is annoying. Every time you die, you get a full-screen video ad unless you pay to remove them. I get it, the app is free, but on a busy morning when I just want to sneak in one more run before a meeting, sitting through a 30-second ad for some match-3 game makes me want to throw my phone into the nearest trash can. And the in-app purchases for coins or characters? Not terrible, but definitely not necessary. You can grind for hours to unlock a new character, or you can drop a couple bucks. I didn’t buy anything and I’m fine, but it’s clearly designed to nudge you toward spending.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free. So yes, it’s “worth” zero dollars. But is it worth your time? That depends. If you’re looking for something to fill two minutes while waiting for coffee or a meeting to start, absolutely. I’ve gotten plenty of short bursts of fun out of it without spending a cent. But if you’re hoping for a game you’ll still be excited about in three months? Probably not. The endless runner genre is what it is. You hop until you die, then you start over. That’s the whole deal. For a free app, the polish is there—no crashes, smooth performance, cute style. But I wouldn’t pay for any of the extras. The coin packs and character bundles feel overpriced for what’s basically a digital skin. Save your money. The ad-removal option is the only thing close to worth it, and even then, I’d only grab it if you really hate commercials.

This is where my patience ran out. I had an issue where the game froze twice in a row on the multiplayer lobby—nothing crazy, just had to force close it. I figured I’d shoot Hipster Whale a quick message through their support form just to see if it was a known bug. I sent it on a Wednesday evening. I got a reply… nine days later. The email was a generic copy-paste that basically said “try restarting your device.” No apology for the wait, no acknowledgment that I’d already done that. I replied asking if there was an update planned. That was three weeks ago and I’ve heard nothing. I run a busy schedule. I don’t have time to chase support over a free game. It left a bad taste in my mouth, even though the app itself works fine 99% of the time. If you’re the type who needs responsive help when something breaks, don’t expect much here.

Privacy & Safety

I checked the permissions when I installed it because I’m paranoid after that whole data-selling mess with other apps. Crossy Road asks for basically nothing—no contacts, no location, no camera access. It doesn’t require an account to play, which I love. You can hop in completely anonymous and just tap away. There’s an option to log in with Facebook for the leaderboard stuff, but I skipped that. The ads are there, obviously, so you’re getting tracked for ad targeting like every free app. That’s the trade-off. But compared to some games that demand access to your photos and microphone for no reason, this feels pretty respectful. No weird background activity on my S23 either. Battery drain is minimal. For a free game in 2024, that’s a win in my book.
