My Experience with ChargePoint

I’ve been using ChargePoint on my iPhone 15 Pro for just over a year, and my feelings are mixed. When it works, it’s brilliant. I can find a charger, start a session, and pay without ever touching my wallet. That efficiency is exactly what I need. But when it doesn’t work, it completely derails my schedule. I remember a Tuesday morning last month, running late for a 9 AM meeting downtown. The app showed a station with two open spots a block from my office. I rushed over, only to find both spots taken by non-EVs. The app still showed them as available. I had to drive another ten minutes, making me late and starting my day off completely wrong. For a busy person, that kind of unreliable info is a major problem.

Features Worth Noting

The map and remote start are the core reasons I keep the app. Being able to see charger types and prices before I go is a huge time-saver. I filter for fast chargers when I’m below 20% and it usually points me in the right direction. Starting a session from my phone is the best feature, hands down. No more tapping a card or dealing with a grimy, unresponsive screen on the charger itself. I was at the Whole Foods on Oak Street last week, plugged in during a downpour, and started charging from the dry comfort of my driver’s seat. The session history is also clean and helpful for tracking my monthly expenses. It breaks down cost by location, which is great for my expense reports.

What Needs Work

The app’s performance is inconsistent. Sometimes it’s snappy, other times it lags or freezes when trying to initiate a charge. I’ve had to force-quit it more times than I’d like. The biggest issue, as I mentioned, is station status accuracy. “Available” doesn’t always mean physically available, and I’ve encountered a few stations marked as operational that were clearly broken. The notification for when your car is nearly charged is also hit or miss; sometimes it pings me at 80%, other times I don’t get the alert until I’m already back at the car. For an app that manages a critical service, this lack of reliability is its biggest flaw.

Pricing

The app is free, which is great. You only pay for the electricity. I appreciate that the price per kWh or the session fee is always shown upfront on the map. There’s no surprise when you get the receipt in the app. I’ve noticed that paying through the ChargePoint app is almost always cheaper than using a credit card directly at the station terminal. The transparency is there, and the payment process itself is one of the smoother parts of the experience. My card is saved, so it’s usually just a couple of taps.

Developer Notes

I see updates pop up every few weeks in the App Store. The patch notes usually mention bug fixes and performance improvements. I can’t say I’ve noticed a dramatic change after any single update, but the app hasn’t gotten worse, which is something. I haven’t had to contact support myself, but skimming the App Store reviews shows a real mix. Some people praise quick resolutions, others complain about slow responses. My own experience has been trouble-free on that front, but only because I haven’t had a catastrophic failure that required help.

Security & Privacy

I had my reservations about linking a payment method to an app for a physical service like this. So far, I haven’t had any fraudulent charges or weird activity. The app uses a PIN or Face ID to authorize payments, which adds a layer of security I require. Their privacy policy seems standard for this type of service—they collect location and usage data to make the map work. I’m okay with that trade-off for the functionality. I haven’t seen any spam or weird marketing emails from them since I signed up, which is a plus.

Frequently asked questions
Can I start and pay for a charging session entirely from my phone?

Yes, the app allows you to start a session remotely and pay without ever pulling out your wallet. This is especially handy in bad weather or when the charger’s screen is unresponsive.

Does ChargePoint show charger types and pricing before I go?

Absolutely. The app’s map lets you filter by charger type and displays prices upfront, so you can plan your stop. It also saves your session history with cost breakdowns by location, which is great for tracking expenses.

Why does the app sometimes show a station as available when it’s actually taken?

Station status can be unreliable because the app relies on user reports and connectivity, not real-time physical sensors. If a non-EV parks in the spot or a charger is broken but marked operational, the app won’t update until someone reports it.

The app lags or freezes when I try to start a charge—what can I do?

This is a known performance issue. Try force-quitting the app and reopening it, or make sure your iPhone has a strong internet connection. If it keeps happening, reinstalling the app can sometimes clear up the glitch.

How does ChargePoint compare to other EV charging apps like PlugShare?

ChargePoint is great for seamless payment and starting sessions from your phone, but its station status accuracy is weaker than PlugShare’s community-driven updates. PlugShare often has more reliable real-time availability because users actively report problems.
