About ArtsWave
I saw ArtsWave with a high rating on the App Store and decided to try it out on my iPhone 15 Pro. I’m always looking for things to do in Cincinnati, especially art-related, so the promise of a local event hub seemed perfect. Right off the bat, it delivered on finding stuff. On my second day using it, a Tuesday evening, I found a last-minute ceramics demo in Walnut Hills I would have completely missed. The app clearly knows the local scene. But my excitement was quickly tempered when I started poking around its settings and privacy details. For an app that’s basically a calendar and social feed, some of its permission requests felt like overreach.
Features & Highlights
The event calendar is genuinely useful. You can filter by date and type of event, which is how I found that ceramics thing. I like that you can save events and get reminders. The community feed is okay—I posted a picture from the demo and got a couple likes. There’s also an AR feature to see how art might look on your wall, which is a neat gimmick I tried once. The artist profiles are cool for following local creators. My main issue isn’t with the features themselves; it’s that the app asks for a lot of personal data to power them. To get the “best experience,” it pushes you to share your location, contacts, and photo library access. That immediately set off alarms for me.
User Experience
Setting up was fast. I used a throwaway email, which I do for most apps now. The interface is clean and easy to navigate. Scrolling through events is smooth, and tapping on one gives you all the details. I had a problem where an event I saved didn’t sync to my Apple Calendar. I went into the app settings to check permissions and was greeted with a long list of data it *could* access. I denied most of them, and the app still worked fine for browsing, which makes you wonder why they ask for so much in the first place. The experience is good if you just want to look, but the deeper you go, the more it feels like it’s mining for information.
Pricing
It’s free. There are no subscriptions or paywalls, which is honestly its biggest selling point. You can browse every event, message artists, and use all the features without spending a dime. There are small banner ads for local businesses at the bottom of some screens, but they’re not annoying. For the price, you get a lot of value in terms of content and discovery. I just wish the currency wasn’t also my personal data.
Updates & Support
This is where my opinion really soured. After the calendar sync issue, I used the contact form in the app to ask for help. I got an auto-reply the next day saying my ticket was received. Two full days later, I got a real response, but it was just a vague link to a generic FAQ page about device permissions. It didn’t address my specific problem at all. I wrote back clarifying, and it’s been radio silence since. For an app that wants to connect a community, the support feels disconnected and lazy. It doesn’t inspire confidence.
Security & Privacy
This is my biggest hang-up. I read the privacy policy. It says they collect device identifiers, usage data, location, and can share it with “analytics partners” and for “marketing purposes.” The app requested access to my contacts “to find friends,” which I find unnecessary and invasive. Why does an art event app need my contacts? I denied almost everything except notifications. It still works, proving those permissions aren’t crucial. The fact they’re so aggressively sought makes me distrustful. I’ll keep using it to find events, but with maximum restrictions and zero personal info shared. It’s a shame, because the core idea is so good.
What kind of events can I find on ArtsWave?
ArtsWave focuses on local art and cultural events in Cincinnati, like ceramics demos and gallery openings. You can filter by date and event type to find exactly what interests you, and save events to get reminders.
Does ArtsWave have any unique features like AR?
Yes, ArtsWave includes an AR feature that lets you see how a piece of art would look on your wall. It’s a fun gimmick, but most users find the event calendar and artist profiles more useful day-to-day.
Why does ArtsWave ask for so many permissions, like location and contacts?
The app pushes for location, contacts, and photo library access to personalize your experience, but you can deny most of these and still browse events fine. If you’re privacy-conscious, use a throwaway email and only grant permissions you’re comfortable with.
My saved events aren’t syncing to my Apple Calendar. How can I fix this?
This can happen if ArtsWave’s calendar permissions are restricted. Go to your iPhone’s Settings > ArtsWave and make sure Calendar access is enabled, then try saving the event again.
How does ArtsWave compare to a general event app like Eventbrite?
ArtsWave is more focused on Cincinnati’s local art scene, so you’ll find niche workshops and demos that Eventbrite might miss. However, Eventbrite has broader event categories and doesn’t push for as many personal permissions.
