About Academic IELTS Help

I heard about this app from my grandson, Michael. He knows I’ve been trying to improve my English for a while, and the app I was using before suddenly changed its layout and started asking for money. I was fed up. So last Tuesday afternoon, I went onto my iPhone and downloaded Academic IELTS Help. I’ve been using it for three days now, and it’s a breath of fresh air. It doesn’t try to do too much or confuse me with fancy graphics. It just seems to be exactly what it says: help for the IELTS test. I was a bit nervous about it being free, thinking there must be a catch, but I gave it a shot.

Features & Highlights

The best part, without a doubt, is the speaking practice. In my old app, you just recorded yourself and that was it. Here, you get a question, you talk for two minutes, and then the app gives you notes. The first time I tried it, I was sitting at my kitchen table after breakfast. I got a prompt about describing a memorable journey. I rambled on about a train trip to Edinburgh years ago. When I finished, the app told me I used “and then” too many times and that I paused a lot. It was specific! I knew exactly what to work on. The vocabulary section is also very sensible. Words are put into groups like “health” or “cities,” which makes them easier to remember and use. The practice tests for reading and listening feel real, and the timer helps me get used to the pressure.

User Experience

This is where the app really shines for someone like me. When you open it, you see four big, clear buttons: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking. You tap what you want and you’re in. No digging through menus. I don’t feel like I need a manual to figure it out. On Wednesday morning, I did a quick vocabulary drill with my coffee, and later, I attempted a full reading test. It was straightforward. My one complaint is about looking back at my answers. After a test, you have to scroll down through all your answers, and then scroll even more to see the correct ones. I kept losing my place. I wish they were right next to each other so my old eyes could compare them easily.

Pricing

It’s free. I’ll say it again, it’s completely free. No sections asking for a credit card, no “upgrade to pro” messages popping up. Because it’s free, it shows ads. You’ll see a little bar at the bottom of the screen most of the time, which is fine, it doesn’t bother me. But after you finish a long practice test, a full-screen video ad will play. It’s a bit jarring. You’re concentrating hard for an hour, you finally finish, and suddenly there’s a loud ad for a mobile game. For the price, though, I can’t really complain. You get a lot of good material.

Updates & Support

I haven’t had the app long enough to see an update, but it runs smoothly on my iPhone 14. I did have one small question about where to find my past speaking recordings. I couldn’t find the button at first. I used the “Contact Support” form inside the app’s settings. I didn’t hear back for a couple of days, which had me worried, but then I got a very nice, plain-English email from a person named Sarah. She explained exactly where to look and even attached a screenshot with a circle around the button. It was helpful, just not instant.

Security & Privacy

I always wonder about these things. The app asks for permission to use the microphone, which makes sense for the speaking part. I allowed it. In the settings, there’s a privacy policy you can read. It says they collect some usage data to improve the app, but they don’t sell your personal information. I didn’t have to create an account with my email or anything, which I liked. I’m just “User 12345” to them, and that’s perfectly fine by me. It feels low-risk.

Frequently asked questions
How does the speaking practice feature work in the Academic IELTS Help app?

The app provides a speaking prompt and allows you to record yourself for two minutes. After recording, it gives you specific feedback, such as noting overused phrases or frequent pauses, to help you improve.

What is the structure of the vocabulary section in the app?

Vocabulary words are organized into practical, thematic groups like 'health' or 'cities'. This grouping makes it easier to learn and remember words in context for the IELTS test.

How can I review my answers after completing a practice test?

After a test, you must scroll down through all your answers and then scroll further to see the correct ones. Some users find this inconvenient as the answers aren't side-by-side for easy comparison.

Are there any intrusive advertisements in the free version of the app?

The app shows a small ad bar at the bottom of the screen. However, after finishing a long practice test, a full-screen video ad plays, which some users find disruptive after a period of concentration.

How does Academic IELTS Help compare to other IELTS apps in terms of user interface?

Unlike some apps that can be cluttered or confusing after updates, this app has a simple, clear interface with four main buttons for each skill. It's designed for straightforward navigation without complex menus.

✓  Pros
✓ The speaking feedback points out specific habits like overusing certain words. Vocabulary is sorted into useful topics, not just a giant list. Completely free with no hidden paywalls or subscriptions. The layout is simple and easy to navigate from the first tap.
✗  Cons
✗ Full-screen ads pop up right after finishing a long test. Comparing your test answers to the correct ones requires too much scrolling.
