First Impression

I only downloaded this because my dad insisted after I got my AAA membership. Honestly, I thought it was just going to be a digital card taking up space on my iPhone 14. I figured I’d use it once to set it up and then forget about it. The first time I opened it, it looked pretty basic, which I guess is fine for an emergency tool. I didn’t have high hopes. I just needed it for that one specific reason—having proof of membership without digging through my messy glovebox.

What It Does Well

When it works, it’s a total lifesaver. The roadside assistance button is the main thing, and it’s brilliant. Last semester, on a Tuesday morning before my 8 AM econ final, my car wouldn’t start in my apartment parking lot. I was panicking. I opened the app, hit the big “Roadside” button, and it already had my location and car info. I submitted the request in maybe 30 seconds. Watching the tow truck’s little icon move on the map in real-time was the only thing that kept me calm. I also use the gas price finder all the time. Driving between campus and home, I’ll check it and often find a station a few blocks away that’s 20 cents cheaper. For a student budget, those small savings add up fast.

Where It Falls Short

The app feels like two different things glued together. The emergency stuff is solid, but the other features, like booking hotels or finding discounts, are clunky. It just opens a slow, mobile website inside the app. I tried to book a hotel for a conference once and gave up, switching to a different site. Also, the maps can be really slow to load if you don’t have perfect service, which defeats the purpose when you’re stranded somewhere sketchy. It’s frustrating when the core idea is so good, but the extra features don’t get the same attention.

Is It Worth the Price?

The app itself is free, which is the only price point I truly love. You do need the AAA membership, which my dad helps me pay for. So from my purely cost perspective, if you already have the membership, you’d be crazy not to use the app. It makes the membership you’re paying for way more useful and accessible. I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth from the tow alone, not to mention the gas savings. It turns a “just in case” membership into a tool I actually use regularly.

Developer & Support

This is my biggest gripe. Over the summer, the app logged me out and wouldn’t recognize my membership number to log back in. I was about to go on a road trip and couldn’t access my card. I used the contact form in the app. I got a generic auto-reply email saying they’d get back to me. Two full days later, I got another email that just said to “try uninstalling and reinstalling the app.” That was it. No apology for the wait, no explanation. I did it, and it worked, but I felt completely unsupported. For an app that’s supposed to be your lifeline in a crisis, that kind of vague, slow response is really worrying.

Privacy & Safety

It’s AAA, so I trust them with my basic info like my car details and location, especially since they already have it for my membership. The app asks for location access, which makes sense so you don’t have to type your address when you’re stuck on the side of the road. I haven’t seen any weird permissions requests. I feel okay about it because the data it uses seems directly tied to providing the service. I just downloaded it from the normal App Store and called it a day.
