About FoodHero

I hate throwing away food, but I’m terrible at remembering what’s in the back of my fridge. I downloaded FoodHero hoping it would be the nagging, organized friend I needed. The promise of cutting down waste and getting recipe ideas from my own pantry really appealed to me as someone who cooks at home most nights but isn’t a master planner.

Features & Highlights

The core idea here is solid. The inventory scanner is the star for me. I spent a Saturday morning scanning everything from cans of beans to yogurt cups. It’s satisfying to see a digital list of what I own. The expiration date alerts are useful, though I wish I could customize how far in advance I get the notification. The recipe suggestion engine is where I see real value. Last week, it saw I had wilting spinach, half an onion, and some eggs, and suggested a simple frittata. That saved a trip to the store and a guilty toss in the compost.

Other features feel less developed. The meal planner is basic and a bit rigid. I tried to drag a recipe from Tuesday to Thursday and it just didn’t work. The community sharing section exists, but it’s pretty quiet. I posted a question about using up leftover rice and got one reply two days later.

User Experience

My first impression was that the app looks a bit dated. The colors are fine, but navigating between my inventory, the recipes, and the shopping list isn’t as smooth as I’d like. There’s a slight lag when switching tabs. I had a specific moment of frustration when I manually added “chicken breast” to my inventory, and later the recipe filter didn’t recognize it as “chicken,” so it showed me vegetarian recipes. The shopping list integration is handy—I used it at the store—but I couldn’t figure out how to sort items by aisle, which is a standard feature in other list apps.

On the plus side, logging a meal for the nutrition tracker was straightforward. I don’t use it daily, but when I wanted to check my protein intake for a few days, the data was clear and easy to read.

Pricing

The app is completely free to download and use, with no subscription tiers or premium features locked behind a paywall. For the price, it’s definitely worth a try if food waste is a concern. You get the core scanning, inventory, and recipe features without spending a dime. I just wouldn’t expect a perfectly polished experience.

Updates & Support

Looking at the update history in the app store, the developer pushes small bug-fix updates every couple of months, but there hasn’t been a major feature overhaul in a while. I had an issue where a scanned product wasn’t in their database. I used the in-app feedback form and actually got a human response within 48 hours asking for a photo of the barcode, which was impressive for a free app. They added it within the week.

Security & Privacy

I downloaded FoodHero directly from the Google Play Store. Their privacy policy is fairly standard for a free app. They collect inventory and usage data to improve the service and show you relevant recipes. You will see banner and interstitial ads, which can be a bit intrusive when you’re in the middle of planning a meal. There’s no option to remove them, but that’s the trade-off for a free tool. I didn’t notice any overly aggressive or creepy tracking from the ads.
