What Needs Work

The ads are annoying. After every single move, you get a 30-second video for some random mobile game or a credit card offer. You can close it after five seconds, but it still breaks the flow. I’d pay a small one-time fee to remove them, but the only option is a monthly subscription which I refuse to buy. Also, the app drains my iPhone 15 Pro battery faster than I’d like. I played during a four-hour flight last March, and my battery dropped from 80% to 30%. That’s rough. Another thing — some opponents play suspiciously fast with words I’ve never heard of. It removes ads and gives you some power-ups and extra tile styles. I tried the free trial for one week and honestly, the power-ups are just fancy shortcuts to win easier. I didn’t see the point. There are also one-time purchases for coins and boosters, but I never bought any. A pack of 100 coins costs $1.99, which lets you buy hints or swap tiles. I used the free coins they give you at the start and that was enough. For a budget-conscious person like me, the free version is totally playable. You just have to tolerate the ads. If they offered a one-time $4.99 ad-removal forever, I’d pay that in a heartbeat. But the subscription model feels like they want ongoing money, which I refuse to give.

Developer Notes

Zynga updates the app fairly often, maybe every few months. I noticed they added new tile sets last winter and a “word of the day” feature that nobody asked for. The app store version history shows they fix bugs, but I never saw a patch note that addressed the ad frequency. The developer doesn’t respond to most user reviews, based on what I’ve read. Some people complain about lost game progress, but that never happened to me. I do wish they’d listen to feedback about the repetitive ads. There’s also a weird thing where the app asks you to connect to Facebook to find friends. I skipped that because I don’t trust it. The developer seems more focused on selling subscriptions than improving the core experience. Still, for a free game that’s been around for years, it works well enough.

I’m pretty careful about what I install. Words with Friends 2 Classic asks for permission to access your contacts if you want to invite friends, but I said no and it still worked fine. They also want push notification access, which I allowed because it’s useful. The privacy policy is long and boring, but I skimmed it — they collect your game data, device info, and ad interactions. That’s typical for free apps. They share data with third-party advertisers, which is why you see targeted ads. I didn’t see any red flags about selling personal info. But I did notice that the app has a weird tendency to track your location if you enable it for some game features. I kept that off. No data breaches reported that I know of. For a free game from a big company like Zynga, it’s about as safe as any other mobile game. Just don’t chat with strangers about anything personal.
