Whova – Event & Conference App

First Impression

So the app I used before this one started freezing every five minutes during a big work conference back in March, and I was fed up. I saw Whova pop up as a recommended alternative on some event invite email, figured why not, and gave it a shot. First time I opened it, I was honestly surprised at how clean it looked. Not gonna lie, I was expecting some clunky mess with too many buttons everywhere, but the home screen was actually pretty straightforward. I could see the agenda right there, my scheduled sessions, and a little map of the venue. It didn’t take me forever to figure out where things were. I remember being at my desk on a Tuesday afternoon, just poking around, and I had my profile set up within maybe five minutes. That’s rare for me—I usually get lost in menus and give up.

What It Does Well

The agenda feature is the main reason I keep using this app. You can swipe between days, tap a session to see who’s speaking, and even add personal notes—which I actually used during a boring keynote about supply chain stuff. I liked that it sent me a push notification ten minutes before a session I had bookmarked, saved my butt once when I was grabbing coffee and lost track of time. The networking thing is also pretty good. You can see who else is attending, send them a quick message, or even set up a little virtual coffee chat. I actually met a guy named Derek from a different company that way, and we ended up swapping ideas for like twenty minutes during a break. The live polling feature during sessions is neat too—speakers ask a question, you answer in real time, and the results show up on the screen. Felt fun and made me pay attention more.

Where It Falls Short

Okay, so it’s not all sunshine. The app can get really sluggish when there are a lot of people on it. I was at a conference with maybe 500 attendees, and the app took forever to load the attendee list. I literally sat there staring at a spinning circle for a solid twenty seconds. That’s annoying when you’re trying to quickly find someone’s profile before a session starts. Also, the messaging feature is a bit weird. Sometimes I’d send a message to someone and it would show as “sent” but they’d tell me later they never got a notification. So I had to go back and check manually. That happened twice, and it made me look a little silly. Another thing—the app drains my iPhone 15 Pro battery like crazy. After a full day of conferences, I’d be down to like 20% by 3 PM, and I wasn’t even using it that much. I had to start carrying a portable charger everywhere.

Is It Worth the Price?

Well, I didn’t pay for it directly because my work covers the conference fees that include the app access, so I can’t give you a dollar amount. But I’ve heard from event organizers that it’s not cheap—like per-event licensing and stuff. For me as an attendee, I’d say it’s decent if you’re going to a big multi-day event where you need to stay organized. Would I pay out of my own pocket for it? Probably not. There are free alternatives that do the basics like agendas and maps just fine, even if they’re uglier. But if your company is paying, sure, it’s a solid tool. Just don’t expect it to be flawless.

Developer & Support

Man, I had to contact support once because the app kept crashing when I tried to open a PDF handout from a session. I sent a message through the in-app help thing on a Friday afternoon. Got an automated reply saying they’d get back to me. Then nothing for like three days. I followed up on Monday, got another generic message saying they were “looking into it.” Finally on Wednesday, a person named Sarah responded with a suggestion to reinstall the app. That actually fixed it, but the slow response made me feel like they weren’t super on top of things. For an app that’s supposedly used by huge corporate events, you think they’d have faster support. It wasn’t a terrible experience, but it wasn’t great either.

Privacy & Safety

I’m not one to read the full privacy policy, but I did notice that the app asks for access to your contacts and location when you first set it up. I gave it location access for the venue map stuff, but I denied contacts because I didn’t want it syncing my whole phone book. It still worked fine without that. They also have a badge scanning feature for check-in, which uses the camera. I guess that’s normal for events. I didn’t see any weird requests for microphone or photo access unless you’re actively taking a picture for your profile. Feels about average for an event app. Nothing sketchy that I could see, but I’d recommend just being careful with what permissions you grant, especially if it’s a random conference you’re not sure about.
