Where It Falls Short

Now, I’ve got to be honest about the downsides. The biggest problem is the in-app purchases. They push them on you constantly. Every time I finish a round, there’s an ad for a special ball pack or a club upgrade. I can’t stand that. I get it — they need to make money. But it feels like they want me to spend $5 every time I blink. I’ve never bought anything, and I still enjoy the game, but it’s annoying to tap “No thanks” over and over. Another frustration is the energy system. You only have so many “tickets” to play matches, especially in multiplayer. Once you run out, you have to wait hours or pay up. That’s messed up for a retiree like me who has all day to play. Last Tuesday, I was on a hot streak and hit a great eagle putt, then the game told me I was out of tickets. I had to stop. That killed my momentum. Also, the game needs a stable internet connection. If I’m in my backyard and the Wi-Fi drops, the game kicks me out of a tournament round. That happened twice and made me lose progress. For a mobile game, it shouldn’t be so dependent on the web. One more small thing — the tutorial is helpful at first, but some of the advanced mechanics like backspin and curve shots aren’t explained well. I had to watch a YouTube video from a stranger to learn how to apply spin. That could be clearer.

Is It Worth the Price?

The app is free to download, so there’s no upfront cost. That’s good. But you have to ask yourself if the frustration of ads and energy limits is worth your time. For me, it is. I’ve played this game almost every day for months without spending a dime. That’s rare. The free content — the courses, single-player challenges, daily rewards — gives me plenty to do. I don’t need the fancy balls or clubs. The game gives you decent equipment as you level up. If you have patience, you can earn everything for free. But if you’re the type who wants the best gear right away, you’ll probably end up spending money. I’d say it’s worth the price of zero dollars, as long as you can ignore the nagging to buy stuff. Honestly, I’ve paid for coffee that gave me less enjoyment. So yeah, it’s a good deal for a free game.

The app gets updated every few weeks with new courses and events, which keeps things fresh. I noticed they fixed a bug where the game would crash on my phone after an update. That was nice. As for support, I’ve never contacted them directly because I never had a problem that needed help. But I read the app store reviews, and some people complain about losing progress or not getting refunds for purchases. I can’t speak to that myself. The reviews seem mixed — some people are happy, some are mad. I just stick to playing for free and it works fine. The developer seems responsive to updates, which is more than I can say for some other apps I’ve tried.
