First Impression

I’ll be honest, I downloaded TRANSFORMERS: Earth Wars because I was killing time waiting for a group project meeting on a Tuesday afternoon. My Google Pixel 7 had a few dead spots in my student apartment, and I wanted something I could play without WiFi. The first tutorial battle actually surprised me—you pick a side (Autobots or Decepticons) and start smashing stuff pretty quick. The graphics are way better than I expected for a free game, and Optimus Prime actually looks like himself, not some weird knockoff. I thought it would be just another cash grab with a famous name slapped on it, but the base building and real-time fights felt decent right from the start. My roommate laughed at me for playing a “kids’ game,” but honestly, the strategy part requires some thinking.

What It Does Well

The character collection is the main hook here, and I’ll admit it’s addictive. There are over 100 bots to unlock, and each one has unique abilities that actually matter in battle. I love that you can mix and upgrade your squad—Bumblebee zips around, while Optimus tanks damage. The base defense part is pretty clever too. You build walls, turrets, and traps to stop enemy raids, and you can watch replays of attacks against your base to learn from mistakes. The alliance system is solid for a mobile game. I joined a group called “CybertronsUnited,” and we coordinated attacks on a boss event last Saturday. The chat feature is basic but works, and getting help from strangers online felt strangely social. The 3D graphics run smoothly on my Pixel 7, even during chaotic battles with explosions and lasers flying everywhere. The sound design is also decent—transformations have that classic clanking noise, and the voice lines from the cartoon actors really hit the nostalgia button.

Where It Falls Short

Okay, the big problem is the waiting game. Everything takes forever unless you spend money. Upgrading a building to level 5? That’s 12 hours. Unlocking a new character? Maybe three days of grinding. I get that mobile games need to make money, but this feels excessive for a student who just wants to play for 20 minutes between classes. The in-app purchases are shoved in your face constantly. There’s a pop-up for a “special offer” every time you log in, and the prices are ridiculous—like $10 for a bundle of premium currency that barely lets you do anything meaningful. Another issue: the single-player campaign gets repetitive fast. It’s the same “attack this base” mission over and over, with slight difficulty bumps. I wish there was more variety in objectives. Also, the game drains your battery like crazy. On my Pixel 7, an hour of play eats about 35% battery. I learned that the hard way during a two-hour lecture when my phone died.

Is It Worth the Price?

Since it’s free to download, the price tag isn’t the problem—it’s the time investment. If you’re patient and don’t mind waiting days for upgrades, you can absolutely enjoy this game without spending a dime. I’ve been playing for three days straight and haven’t paid a penny yet. But if you’re the type who hates being stuck or wants instant gratification, this game will frustrate you into spending money. For me as a student, I’d rather put that cash toward coffee or bus fare. The events and daily missions give you enough free resources to keep going, so I’d say it’s worth trying if you’re a Transformers fan or like base-building strategy games. It’s not a must-have, but it’s a decent time waster that beats scrolling through social media for the fifth time.

I get that it’s a free game, but if you’re going to have a support system, it should actually solve problems. This game asks for standard permissions like access to your device’s storage (for saving game data) and internet connection. There’s also a chat feature in alliances, so you can talk to strangers. I haven’t seen anything too creepy, but I’d warn younger players not to share personal info. The privacy policy says they collect data for ads and analytics, which is pretty normal for a free app. I checked the permissions on my Pixel 7, and nothing seemed off—no camera or microphone access. That said, the game is loaded with ads for other apps, and some of those ads track your activity. If you’re privacy-conscious, you might want to play on airplane mode or use a VPN. For me, it’s fine as long as I don’t type my email into any shady pop-ups.
