First Impression

My old go-to scanner app started pushing a monthly fee just to clear codes, which felt like a rip-off. I went hunting for a free replacement and found ThinkDiag+. The 4.1-star rating looked decent, but I’m always suspicious of “free” apps. I already had a generic ELM327 Bluetooth dongle from Amazon I bought years ago for like $15. I plugged it into my 2012 Hyundai Elantra on a Thursday night, fired up the app on my Pixel 7, and braced for the usual “incompatible adapter” message. To my shock, it connected right away. The interface was clean, no ads screaming at me, and it immediately started pulling codes from my engine computer. My first thought was, “Okay, this might actually work.”

What It Does Well

For a free app, it gives you a lot. Reading and clearing codes is instant, which is the bare minimum. Where it surprised me was the live data. I could watch my engine coolant temperature climb on a cold morning, see my fuel trims adjust, and check the oxygen sensor voltages. Last weekend, my friend’s Jeep had a rough idle. We plugged in, read the codes, and then used the live data to watch the MAF sensor readings while I gave the throttle a blip. Seeing the numbers jump erratically pointed us right to a dirty sensor. We cleared the code after cleaning it, and the Jeep ran smooth. The app also saved a report with all the data, which I emailed to him. For basic diagnostics and peace of mind, it’s powerful stuff without a price tag.

Where It Falls Short

The big catch is in the name: ThinkDiag+. It really wants you to buy their specific dongle. With my cheapo adapter, I could only access the engine computer. All the other cool features—like checking the ABS, airbags, or transmission modules—were grayed out. The app politely tells you those need “an authorized ThinkDiag device.” I tried it on my neighbor’s newer Ford, and same story. So you’re getting a very good, free engine scanner, but the “professional-level” stuff is locked behind their hardware. Also, on my older Hyundai, pulling the full live data list sometimes caused a slight lag, like the car’s computer or my dongle was struggling to keep up.

Is It Worth the Price?

The app costs nothing, so for me, it’s an absolute win. I got a fully functional code reader and live data tool for $0, using hardware I already owned. It solved my immediate problem of replacing a now-paid app. If you need to scan ABS or airbag lights, you’ll have to factor in the cost of their dongle, which is about $70. For a casual DIYer like me who just wants to shut off the check engine light after an oil change cap mistake, the free version is perfect. It’s already saved me one unnecessary mechanic trip for a loose gas cap warning. I haven’t spent a cent.

Developer & Support

I haven’t had to contact support, which is a good sign. The app just worked. Looking at the Google Play reviews, the developer, THINKCAR, seems fairly active. People complain about dongle compatibility (which I understand now) and sometimes get helpful replies. I did get one app update during my two weeks of testing. The update log mentioned “performance improvements and bug fixes,” which is vague but better than nothing. They’re clearly updating it, and for a free product, that’s more than I expected. It doesn’t feel abandoned.

Privacy & Safety

The app asks for pretty standard permissions: location (probably for Bluetooth), and storage to save reports. I was happy to see it didn’t demand access to my contacts or anything weird. It needs an internet connection initially, I think to download vehicle profiles, but after that, scanning works offline in my garage. All the data stays on my phone. I didn’t see any obvious trackers or sketchy privacy policy pop-ups. It feels like a tool, not a data harvester. I’m comfortable using it.

Frequently asked questions
What features does the free version of ThinkDiag+ offer?

The free version lets you read and clear engine diagnostic trouble codes instantly, view live data like coolant temperature and fuel trims, and generate detailed reports you can email. However, advanced modules like ABS, airbags, and transmission are locked unless you buy ThinkDiag's own dongle.

Can ThinkDiag+ work with any generic ELM327 Bluetooth adapter?

Yes, it connected to my cheap $15 ELM327 dongle without any compatibility issues on my 2012 Hyundai Elantra. But with a generic adapter, you'll only have access to the engine computer; other systems like ABS or airbags will be grayed out.

Why are some features like ABS and transmission scanning grayed out in the app?

Those features require an authorized ThinkDiag+ hardware dongle to unlock. The app is designed to work fully only with their own device, so if you're using a generic adapter, you'll be limited to the engine control module.

How do I use ThinkDiag+ to diagnose a rough idle or performance issue?

Plug in the adapter, open the app, and read the trouble codes first. Then use the live data feature to monitor sensors like the MAF or oxygen sensors while revving the engine—erratic readings can pinpoint a dirty sensor or vacuum leak, just like we did on my friend's Jeep.

How does ThinkDiag+ compare to other free scanner apps like Torque Pro?

ThinkDiag+ offers a cleaner, ad-free interface and feels more polished out of the box than many free alternatives. However, it heavily pushes you toward buying their proprietary dongle for full functionality, whereas Torque Pro works with more generic adapters across all vehicle modules without extra hardware costs.

✓  Pros
✓ Completely free for core engine scanning and live data.
✓ Clean, ad-free interface that connects easily.
✓ Saves detailed reports you can share or keep for records.
✓ Works with some generic Bluetooth OBD2 dongles, not just theirs.
✗  Cons
✗ Advanced features require their proprietary dongle purchase.
✗ Can feel sluggish when pulling data from older car computers.
✗ The "plus" features are a constant tease if you don't buy their hardware.
