This is basically a reskinned match-3 puzzle game with Dorothy and Toto slapped on top. The levels are laid out on a map that follows the yellow brick road, so you feel like you’re progressing through the story. There are special events like “Defeat the Wicked Witch” weekends where you compete for leaderboard prizes. You can also link to Facebook to challenge friends, but I skipped that because I don’t trust those permissions. The landscapes change as you go—Munchkinland, the dark forest, the castle—which kept me interested longer than most match-3 games.

The free route is slow—you get five lives that refill one every thirty minutes, or you can beg friends for lives through Facebook. I’d rather wait than pay. The value is okay if you treat it as a casual time-waster like I do, but don’t expect a full game experience without spending money. There’s no way to earn premium currency through gameplay alone—everything is designed to nudge you toward your wallet.

The app gets updated about once a month with new levels and events. Since I’ve only had it for two weeks, I’ve seen one update that added a “Fall Festival” event with extra challenges. The update was about 150MB, which is a lot for a puzzle game. I haven’t contacted support, but I read the store reviews—lots of people complaining that their progress disappeared after an update, or that purchased items didn’t show up. That worries me.
