First Impression

Honestly, when I first opened Schoology on my Galaxy S23, I felt a bit lost. The login screen was simple enough — put in the school code and my daughter’s credentials — but then I was staring at a wall of text and buttons. My kid’s high school switched to this thing mid-semester, and I needed a way to check if she actually turned in her assignments or just told me she did. I tried poking around at 9 PM on a Tuesday night, sitting on my couch with my coffee. The dashboard was cluttered. I couldn’t tell which tab was for grades and which was for homework. I almost deleted it right there. But then I found the calendar view, and things started making a little more sense. It wasn’t love at first sight, but I saw potential.

What It Does Well

The calendar feature saved me. Seriously. My daughter has three different teachers who post assignments at random times — one on Sunday night, one on Monday morning. Schoology collects all of that into one weekly view. I can see what’s due tomorrow and what’s coming up next Friday. That alone made me keep the app. The gradebook syncs pretty fast too, so when she says “the teacher hasn’t posted my score yet,” I can check right there on my phone and call her bluff. I also like the notification setup. It buzzes my S23 when a new assignment drops or a grade gets updated. No more digging through emails. The messaging feature works fine for sending quick questions to her homeroom teacher. For a busy parent who just wants to know if their kid is slacking off, this app does the heavy lifting.

Where It Falls Short

Okay, the app has some real annoyances. First, it crashes on me maybe once a day. Just freezes up when I scroll through a long list of graded assignments. I have to close it and reopen. That’s not terrible, but it’s noticeable. Second, the navigation feels backward sometimes. If I’m looking at a specific course, then tap back, I end up at the home screen instead of where I was. Makes me tap around to find my place again. Third — and this is my biggest gripe — the app doesn’t show all the same stuff as the website. I can’t see attached files like PDFs or teacher comments without opening them in another app. One time I tried to open a rubric for a science project and it just gave me a blank white screen. I had to go to my laptop. That defeats the purpose of having a phone app. For something used in schools, you’d think the mobile version would work exactly like the desktop version.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free, so it’s not like I paid anything out of pocket. But free doesn’t mean it’s a good value if it frustrates me. My time is worth something. I spend maybe five extra minutes a day trying to navigate around bugs or reloading the app. That adds up over a school year. For a tool that’s supposed to help me stay on top of my kid’s education, it does the job — just barely. I wouldn’t pay for this if there were a better option, but since the school mandates we use it, I’m stuck. For zero dollars, I’ll put up with the quirks. But I’d be pretty irritated if there was a subscription fee attached. It gets the basics right, but it’s not polished enough to charge for.

Developer & Support

This part disappointed me. I had a problem where the app kept showing a “no internet connection” error even though my Wi-Fi was fine. It happened three days in a row. I emailed Schoology support through their online form on Wednesday afternoon. I got an automated reply right away saying they’d get back to me. Then nothing for two full days. On Friday morning, I finally got a human response — but it was a copy-paste answer telling me to clear my cache and restart my phone. Like, I already tried that before I contacted you. I replied asking for more help, and it’s been radio silence since Saturday. I’m still having the issue occasionally. For an app used by so many students and parents, you’d think they’d have faster, more personal support. One vague email in 48 hours is not helpful.

Privacy & Safety

I’ll be honest, I didn’t think much about privacy until my daughter’s school sent home a form about data collection. Schoology apparently tracks usage patterns and shares some info with third parties for analytics. That made me a little uneasy because it’s a school app, not a game or a social media thing. On the plus side, the app does require a school-provided access code to even log in, so random strangers can’t snoop around. I also see that I can control what notifications are sent and which courses show up on the dashboard. But I wish there was a clearer setting to limit what data gets shared. For something that handles grades and student info, I’d like more transparency right in the app itself, not buried in a PDF from the school office. So far, no weird pop-ups or obvious privacy violations, but I’m keeping an eye on it.
