Northway Games made this. I know that name from some casual puzzle games my wife plays, so I was a little surprised they tackled something this serious. That said, the app feels like it was built by people who actually get that disasters are messy. The support team was friendly and knowledgeable when I finally got through. The guy I talked to, Kevin, didn’t read from a script. He actually knew the app’s quirks and gave me a workaround for the map issue while they worked on a fix. But here’s the thing: for an app that markets itself as a crisis tool, a three-day email lag is not acceptable. They need a chat or phone line for urgent stuff. I’d give the devs credit for making a useful product, but they need to speed up their response time before I’d fully trust them in a real emergency.

Privacy & Safety

I don’t usually care about privacy stuff until it bites me, but Rebuild asks for your location and some personal details to connect you with volunteers and resources. That’s necessary — you can’t find shelters without a location. They do have basic encryption and you can opt out of sharing your exact address. I tested it by using a nearby intersection instead of my home address, and it worked fine. They also don’t seem to sell your data or spam you with ads, which is more than I can say for most free disaster apps. One thing I didn’t like: they ask for your phone number and email during signup, and there’s no clear way to delete your account easily if you change your mind. That’s a minor red flag, but not a dealbreaker for me. I’ll keep using it because it’s practical, but I’d recommend using a spare email if you’re privacy-conscious.
