I picked up Puff Up around this time last year because I was juggling a part-time job at a coffee shop and trying to look put together for classes without spending money on a full closet overhaul. The app lets you snap photos of your clothes and keep them in a virtual closet. Honestly, I was skeptical at first. I thought it’d be another bloated app that asks for too many permissions. But for a broke college student who needed to stop buying repeat t-shirts, it’s surprisingly decent. I remember one Thursday night before a group presentation, I was panicking because I had nothing to wear. I opened Puff Up, mixed a black hoodie with some old jeans I’d forgotten about, and actually got compliments. It’s not perfect, but it’s kept me from wasting money on clothes I don’t need.

Core Features

The main thing is the virtual closet. You upload pictures of your clothes—shirts, pants, shoes, whatever—and sort them by type, color, or season. I mostly use the color sorting because I’m bad at matching. There’s also a calendar where you can plan outfits in advance. I use that for job interviews or when I have to present in class. The app gives you outfit suggestions too, which is hit or miss. Sometimes it pairs a bright sweater with green shorts and I’m like, who wears that? But other times it saves me from staring at my clothes for twenty minutes. It also lets you categorize stuff for different seasons, which helps when I swap out my wardrobe between semesters.

Real-World Use

Last winter, I had to pack for a week-long trip back home. I was stressed about bringing too much stuff. I laid all my clothes on my dorm bed, snapped photos in bad lighting, and used Puff Up to plan five outfits that mixed and matched. It actually worked. I packed light and didn’t end up wearing the same thing every day. But there’s a catch. The app can be slow on my OnePlus 11 sometimes, especially if I have too many items stored. And the photo upload process is clunky. You have to crop each image manually or it looks weird. I wish it would just auto-detect the clothing edges. Still, for a free app, it does the job better than using a notes app or just guessing.

Pricing & Value

It’s free to download. No upfront cost. But like every free app, you hit a wall. The free version lets you store a decent number of items, maybe around 50 or so before it starts nagging you to upgrade. There’s a premium version that removes ads and gives you more storage. I haven’t bought it because I’m a cheapskate, but the ads aren’t too bad. They pop up when you switch between tabs, not during outfit planning. For a student who just wants to organize their closet without spending cash, the free tier is fine. Honestly, I’d rather spend that money on a coffee than on an app upgrade.

Updates & Support

This is where I got annoyed. A few months ago, the app started crashing when I tried to save a new outfit combination. I reached out to support through the in-app email thing. They took like five days to reply, and the response was super vague. Something like “try restarting your device.” I’d already done that. I wrote back asking for more help, but they never answered. I ended up deleting and reinstalling the app, which fixed it, but I lost some of my saved items. That sucked. The app updates are rare too—maybe once every three months? It feels like the developer isn’t super invested. I get it’s a smaller app from VOODOO, but still.

Data & Privacy

You upload pictures of your actual clothes, so privacy is a thing I wondered about. The app asks for camera and storage access, which makes sense. I read through their privacy policy once—it’s in the settings menu. They say they don’t share your photos with third parties, and it’s all stored locally on your phone unless you use the cloud backup feature. I don’t use that because it feels sketchy. Also, there’s no login requirement to use the basic version, which I like. No creepy tracking or selling my data for ads as far as I can tell. But I still wouldn’t upload anything super personal, like a photo with your face in it.
