First Impression

I saw Prune featured on the Play Store last Tuesday night. The screenshots were so stark and artistic, I was curious enough to tap the install button. I always check permissions first, and seeing it only asked for “full network access” gave me pause. I read the developer’s privacy policy linked in the store, and it was pretty generic, just saying they “may collect” data for analytics. I decided to buy it anyway because the game looked unique. That first hour was magical. The black branches growing against the simple colored backgrounds, the soft sound of wind… it immediately sucked me in. On my Galaxy A54, it ran perfectly smooth. I played three levels before I even looked at the clock.

What It Does Well

The core idea of swiping to prune a tree and guide it to sunlight is genius in its simplicity. There’s no timer, no score, no pressure. It’s just you and this living line. I found myself completely focused, trying to figure out the perfect cut to make the tree curl around a red hazard zone. The satisfaction when the branches finally bloom into white flowers in the light is real. It’s one of the few apps that actually makes me put my phone down feeling calmer, not more frazzled. The visual and sound design work together to create a genuinely peaceful mood. It’s a polished, complete experience that feels like a piece of interactive art.

Where It Falls Short

My main issue came on the third day. I was stuck on a later level with a moving sun. I must have tried twenty times, and my tree kept dying. I wondered if there was a bug or if I was missing something. So I used the contact form in the app to ask for a hint. I got an auto-reply saying my message was received. Two days later, I got a real reply that was just a link to a general walkthrough website from 2017. It didn’t address my specific question about the moving sun level at all. It felt like a brush-off. For a paid app, I expected better. Also, while the game is mostly intuitive, I accidentally cut my main trunk a few times with an imprecise swipe, which was frustrating.

Is It Worth the Price?

For the game itself, the $4.99 feels fair. You get a lot of beautiful, thoughtful puzzles with no ads or nagging for more money. Compared to buying a fancy coffee, this gave me several hours of genuine relaxation and mental engagement. It’s a premium product. But that value is slightly undermined by the weak support response and the lingering question about what data that “full network access” is actually used for. You’re paying for art, but the business side feels a bit detached.

Developer & Support

The developer, Joel McDonald, clearly put immense care into creating Prune. The game is a testament to that. However, my support experience was poor. The slow, copy-pasted response to my question made me feel like my issue wasn’t even read. It gave me the impression that once you’ve bought the app, you’re on your own. I checked the app listing again and saw it hasn’t been updated in over a year. While the game doesn’t feel broken, that lack of recent activity, combined with the support ticket, makes me doubt any future issues would be resolved.

Privacy & Safety

This is my biggest hang-up. The app requires “full network access.” The linked privacy policy is vague, stating it may collect device info and usage data for “analytics and improvement.” It doesn’t specify what exactly is collected, where it’s sent, or how long it’s stored. For a minimalist, offline-style puzzle game, this level of data collection feels unnecessary. I turned off my Wi-Fi and mobile data to play, and the game worked fine, which proves it doesn’t need connectivity to function. Why does it ask for it then? It casts a shadow on an otherwise beautiful experience. I wish the developer was as transparent here as he was artistic in the game design.

Frequently asked questions
What is the core gameplay mechanic in Prune?

You swipe to cut branches and guide a growing tree toward sunlight, avoiding red hazard zones. There are no timers or scores, just a peaceful, meditative experience where you shape the tree's growth to make it bloom.

Does Prune require an internet connection to play?

No, the game itself is fully offline once installed. The only permission it requests is for network access, which is used for optional analytics and the in-app contact form.

I'm stuck on a level with a moving sun; my tree keeps dying. What should I do?

Try planning your cuts ahead of time, anticipating where the sun will move next. The key is to prune early and leave enough branches so you can adjust the tree's direction as the sun shifts.

I contacted support through the app but only got a generic walkthrough link. Is that normal?

Unfortunately, some users have reported that support replies can feel impersonal, often linking to a general walkthrough from 2017. If you need specific help, you might have better luck searching online forums or video guides for your exact level.

How does Prune compare to other meditation or puzzle games like Alto's Odyssey?

Both games offer a calming, artistic experience, but Prune is more focused on deliberate, slow-paced problem-solving without any score or timer. Alto's Odyssey adds an endless runner element with scoring, while Prune is a contained, level-based puzzle that feels like interactive art.
