First Impression
I downloaded Prosaic out of pure frustration. My old writing app, which I won’t name, started lagging horribly on my Pixel 7. I’d tap a key and wait half a second for the letter to appear—it was infuriating and completely killed my flow. I needed something fast and clean, immediately. Opening Prosaic for the first time, I was skeptical. The interface was almost too simple. But within minutes of starting a project report last Tuesday evening, I realized the simplicity was the point. There was nothing to figure out, no tutorial to sit through. I just started typing and it kept up with me. No fuss.
What It Does Well
This app understands that my time is limited. The “Distraction-Free Mode” is perfect. It hides everything, leaving just my text on a dark gray background. When I’m trying to bang out an email draft during my 20-minute train commute, that focus is everything. The cloud sync is its best feature, hands down. I started a client proposal on my laptop at home, saved it, and when I opened the app on my phone later at the coffee shop, it was right there, cursor waiting. I didn’t have to think about it or manually transfer anything. The AI suggestions are subtle, which I like. They don’t scream at you with red underlines for every minor thing. Once, it quietly suggested a clearer way to phrase a convoluted sentence in a contract review, and it was actually helpful, not intrusive.
Where It Falls Short
For a paid app, there are some rough edges. The biggest one for me is the lack of a true quick-action widget for my phone’s home screen. I want to tap an icon and jump straight into a new blank document or my most recent file. Instead, I have to open the app and then navigate. It’s an extra step that annoys me every single time. Also, while the templates are useful, customizing them isn’t as intuitive as it should be. I tried to edit the “Meeting Notes” template and the formatting tools felt a bit clunky, like I was fighting with the app instead of it helping me. It got the job done, but it wasn’t smooth.
Is It Worth the Price?
At $4.99 as a one-time purchase, absolutely. I was so tired of subscription models. Paying once and being done is a huge relief. Compared to the “free” app I came from that was bogged down with ads and performance issues, this feels like a premium upgrade. It does the core job of letting me write, sync, and focus better than anything else I’ve tried recently. For less than the cost of a lunch, it solved my immediate problem and hasn’t created new ones. That’s a win in my book.
Developer & Support
I had one issue where the app briefly wouldn’t load a document from the cloud. I emailed support and heard back from Mitchell, the developer, after about three days. I’ll be honest, I was hoping for a faster reply, but when he did respond, it was thorough and fixed my problem. He explained it was a rare sync conflict and walked me through the fix. He seems engaged; I’ve already gotten one small update since I bought it. It’s not a giant corporate team, but it feels like someone is actually maintaining the thing I paid for.
Privacy & Safety
This was a big concern for me, as I sometimes draft work documents in the app. The privacy policy is clear: your documents are stored locally on your device and encrypted in transit during sync. The AI suggestion feature, according to the developer, processes text on-device for basic grammar and doesn’t send your content to the cloud for analysis unless you use an optional premium AI feature (which I haven’t). I appreciate that transparency. It feels secure enough for my professional needs without being overly complicated.
Does Prosaic have a distraction-free writing mode?
Yes, Prosaic offers a Distraction-Free Mode that hides everything except your text on a dark gray background. It's ideal for focused writing sessions, like drafting emails during a short commute.
How does cloud sync work in Prosaic?
Prosaic's cloud sync is automatic and seamless. You can start a document on your laptop, and it will instantly appear on your phone with the cursor in the same spot, with no manual transfer needed.
I'm frustrated that there's no quick-action widget. Is there a workaround?
Currently, Prosaic lacks a home screen widget for instant document access, which many users find annoying. As a workaround, you can keep the app in your recent apps list to reduce the extra tap needed to open it.
The template customization tools feel clunky. Any tips?
Customizing templates like 'Meeting Notes' can be unintuitive due to limited formatting controls. Try editing the template on a desktop browser if you have access, as the mobile interface is more restrictive.
How does Prosaic compare to other writing apps like iA Writer or Ulysses?
Prosaic is faster and more minimal than many competitors, with subtle AI suggestions instead of intrusive spellcheck. However, it lacks home screen widgets and polished template tools that apps like Ulysses offer, making it better for pure speed than deep customization.
