Overview
NextBus is a free real-time transit tracking app designed to help users monitor bus arrivals. While it offers some useful features, its overall reliability falls short of what is needed for consistent daily use. The app can be helpful in certain moments, but its unpredictable performance often undermines its core purpose of reducing uncertainty around public transit.
Features Worth Noting
The map view, which displays a bus icon moving along its route toward a selected stop, is visually engaging and can be informative when data is accurate. Users can save frequently used stops as favorites, streamlining access for regular commutes. The app also provides push notifications for route detours or service changes, which in some cases arrive more promptly than official transit authority updates. Additionally, the app is completely free with no subscription fees or paywalls, though it includes banner ads at the bottom of the screen.
What Needs Work
The primary limitation is inconsistent data accuracy. Arrival times sometimes jump unexpectedly, showing a bus as “arriving” only to reset to a longer wait, which undermines user trust. The user interface feels dated and cluttered, with small text and densely packed buttons that make navigation cumbersome. Searching for specific stops can be frustrating, as it often requires knowing the stop number or scrolling through a large, poorly organized list. There is also no dedicated feature for quick checks, such as a widget for school bus timing, and it is not always clear whether displayed data is live or based on a static schedule.
Pricing
The app is free to download and use, with no hidden charges. Banner ads are present but generally non-intrusive and appropriate in content. Given the performance issues, the app does not currently justify any paid tier.
