My Experience with Nest

I downloaded Nest about a year ago after my old thermostat app started crashing every time I tried to adjust the heat. That was in February, right when my youngest got sick and I needed to keep the house warm without getting up from the couch. I have a OnePlus 11, and the app ran smooth from day one. I remember the first Tuesday I used it — I was in the kitchen making pancakes and I could turn up the living room temperature from my phone without walking back and forth. It felt like magic, honestly. My wife and I both use it now, and our kids know not to mess with the thermostat because I can check it from work. The setup took maybe twenty minutes, and the app walked me through everything on the screen. I haven’t had any major issues, and I’ve never needed to call support. I read some reviews that said the app glitches after updates, but for me, it’s been stable. I check the energy reports once a month and noticed we saved about $15 on our electric bill in March compared to last year. That’s real money for a family like ours. The app isn’t flashy, but it does what it says it will do, and that’s what matters when you’ve got kids running around and a tight budget.

Features Worth Noting

The biggest feature for me is the Home/Away Assist. I don’t have to remember to turn down the heat when we leave for school drop-off. The app uses my phone location and figures out when nobody’s home. Last Sunday, we went to my mother-in-law’s for dinner, and the app automatically set the thermostat to eco mode. When we pulled back into the driveway, it started warming up again. The live camera feed is also great — I have a Nest Cam pointed at the backyard where my kids play. I can check it while I’m in the grocery store or at work. The video quality is clear on my OnePlus 11, even at night. The smoke alarm alerts are another thing I didn’t think I’d care about until the carbon monoxide detector went off at 2 AM last March. The app sent a push notification to my phone and my wife’s phone, so we knew it wasn’t a false alarm before we even got out of bed. Scheduling is simple too — I set the temperature to drop at 10 PM and kick back up at 6 AM before we wake up. The energy usage reports are clean and easy to read, which helps me see where we’re wasting heat. I’m not a tech person, but I figured all this out in a few days.

What Needs Work

There are a few things that bug me. First, the app really depends on a good internet connection. When our Wi-Fi went out during a storm last summer, I couldn’t adjust the thermostat from my phone at all. I had to walk over to the device itself, which kind of defeats the purpose. Second, the initial setup for our Nest Protect smoke detector took longer than I expected. The app kept asking me to join Wi-Fi networks and scan QR codes, and I had to restart the process twice because it lost connection halfway through. My wife was getting impatient, and I can’t blame her. Third, I wish the app had a simpler way to switch between family members’ accounts. My daughter has her own phone, but I don’t want her changing the temperature without me knowing. The guest access options are buried in settings, and I had to search online to figure them out. Also, the app does show ads for other Google products sometimes, which feels a little pushy when I’m just trying to check the front door camera.

Pricing

The app itself is free, which is great. You pay for the Nest devices separately. I bought the thermostat for about $130 on sale, and the Nest Cam cost me around $180. There’s no monthly fee for basic features like temperature control and camera viewing. However, if you want to keep video history longer than three hours, you have to pay for Nest Aware. That starts at $6 a month or $60 a year for basic alerts and 30-day video history. I signed up for that because I wanted to see what happened in the backyard overnight. It’s not a huge expense, but it adds up. For a family on a budget, you should know that the free version works fine for most things — you just won’t have recorded video clips to look back on. I’d say it’s fair pricing compared to other smart home systems I looked at, but I wish they offered a one-time payment option instead of a subscription.

Developer Notes

I check the app store updates every couple of months. The developer, Nest Labs (which is part of Google now, I think), pushes updates fairly regularly. One update last October changed the layout of the temperature screen, which took me a day to get used to, but I appreciated that they added a dark mode later. I haven’t had any bad experiences with crashes after updates like some other apps I’ve used. The app’s rating of 3.9 seems about right to me — it works well for the basics, but power users might want more control. I notice they respond to some negative reviews in the app store, which shows they care at least a little. That said, I wish they would release more detailed patch notes so I know what changed before I update. Sometimes I’m scared an update will break something, but so far, everything has been fine on my phone.

Security & Privacy

Since this is a family app, I care a lot about who can see my camera feeds and home data. Nest uses your Google account to log in, which means two-factor authentication is available. I set that up right away. The app also shows you a list of devices that are connected, and you can remove any you don’t recognize. I check that list every few weeks. I’ve read some online forums where people worry about Google collecting data from Nest devices, and I get that concern. To be honest, I assume they know when I come and go based on my thermostat settings. But for me, the convenience outweighs the privacy risk. My camera feed is encrypted, and I don’t share access with anyone outside my immediate family. I’ve never had a security issue, and the app sends me alerts if someone tries to log in from a new device. It’s not perfect, but it feels safer than some other smart home apps I tried before.
