First Impression

I downloaded myPhonak about a month ago after my son got his first pair of hearing aids. His audiologist set it up on my iPhone 14. My first thought was relief—finally, I could help him adjust the volume or switch settings without fumbling with those tiny devices on his ears. The main screen looked straightforward, with a big volume slider and some pictures for different sound environments like “Restaurant” or “Music.” It didn’t seem too complicated, which was a big plus for me. I’m not a tech person; I just need things to work when my kid needs help at the playground or during a noisy family dinner.

What It Does Well

The best part is how simple it makes everyday life. Last Tuesday, we were at a crowded indoor play gym, and my son kept taking his aids out because it was too loud. I opened the app, switched to the “Comfort in Noise” setting right from my phone, and he was fine for the rest of the hour. That’s a win. I also love the battery check feature. A quick glance tells me if we’re good for the day or if I need to swap batteries before school. Creating a custom setting for our car rides was easy too—I just called it “Car” and tuned it to reduce road noise. For basic, daily control, it’s exactly what our family needed.

Where It Falls Short

The app isn’t perfect. Sometimes it loses connection with the hearing aids for no clear reason. We’ll be at the grocery store, and I’ll pull out my phone to turn the volume down a bit, and the app just shows “Searching…” It usually reconnects if I close and reopen it, but it’s annoying when you’re trying to be quick. The other thing is that some of the more advanced features, like seeing detailed usage reports, feel buried in menus. I tried to check how long he wore them at school one day and gave up after tapping through three different screens.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free, so you can’t really complain about the price. For the cost of nothing, it adds a lot of value to the very expensive hearing aids we already bought. Being able to adjust settings on the fly is a huge benefit. It turns my phone into a remote control I always have with me. Would I pay a few dollars for it? Probably, if I had to. But knowing it’s free makes the occasional glitch a little easier to swallow. It feels like a necessary part of the hearing aid package, not an extra.

Developer & Support

This is where I got really frustrated. A couple weeks ago, the custom “Car” program I made just disappeared from the app. Gone. I spent twenty minutes trying to figure it out before I used the contact form in the app’s help section. I explained the problem clearly. Three days later, I got a generic email back asking me to check my Bluetooth connection and make sure my app was updated—things I had already done. I wrote back, and it took another two days to get a response that basically said they’d “look into it.” The program never came back. I had to remake it. For an app that manages medical devices, that level of slow, unhelpful support feels irresponsible. It left me feeling like if a real problem happened, we’d be on our own.

Privacy & Safety

As a parent, this is my top concern. The app needs access to Bluetooth and location services (for the “Find My Hearing Aids” feature). I was okay granting that because it makes sense. The privacy policy is long and full of legal jargon, but from what I could piece together, the data seems to stay between us, the app, and our audiologist’s clinic. I don’t see any ads, and there’s no social media integration, which I appreciate. It feels like a closed, medical system. I just wish the app itself was as reliable as the privacy seems to be. Knowing my son’s hearing data isn’t being sold is a major relief.
