About Local Weather Wherever
I downloaded Local Weather Wherever after my old weather app started giving me forecasts for a town 20 miles away. As someone who walks to work, I need to know if it’s drizzling on my exact street, not just in my general area. This app promised hyper-local data, and I was curious to see if it lived up to the hype in my day-to-day routine.
Features & Highlights
The interactive radar map is the star of the show for me. Last Tuesday, I saw a green blob of rain heading my way on the map, but the hourly forecast said it would hold off for another 90 minutes. I trusted the radar, rushed my dog walk, and got inside just as the first drops fell—the hourly update was wrong, but the visual map saved me. I also rely heavily on the customizable alerts. I have one set to ping me if the temperature drops below 40°F overnight so I remember to cover my plants. The 7-day forecast is clean and simple, showing me the high, low, and chance of rain without clutter, which is perfect for planning my week.
User Experience
Opening the app is straightforward. It immediately shows my current location’s temp and conditions with a large, readable font—no squinting needed. I remember one morning it said “Patchy Fog” while other apps just said “Cloudy.” Driving to work, I indeed hit those foggy patches, and that specific detail made me trust it more. However, I did find myself getting lost once or twice trying to find where to add a new saved location; the plus icon isn’t as intuitive as it could be. But once my home and my parents’ city were saved, flipping between them became a one-tap habit.
Pricing
The app is completely free to download and use with no hidden paywalls for core features like the radar, forecasts, or alerts. You will see banner ads at the bottom of the screen, but they’re static and not video ads, so they’re not overly intrusive. There’s no subscription begging you to remove them, which I appreciate. For a free weather app, it offers tremendous value. I haven’t felt the need to pay for a premium version because everything I need is right here.
Updates & Support
Looking at the update history in the app store, the developer, WANWIN LIMITED, pushes out small updates every month or two, mostly for bug fixes and performance improvements. I haven’t noticed any major new features added since I downloaded it, but the app runs smoothly. I had one issue where my location wasn’t updating, and I used the in-app feedback form. I got a generic “we’ll look into it” email reply within 24 hours, and the problem was resolved in the next app update a few weeks later. Support isn’t lightning-fast, but they do seem to address issues.
Security & Privacy
I downloaded it directly from the official Google Play Store. The app requires location access to give you those precise forecasts, which makes sense. In its privacy policy, it states that location data is used solely for providing weather services and is not sold to third parties. I don’t see a ton of personalized ads, which suggests they’re not heavily profiling me. The ads that do appear seem to be general, network-based ads. For a free app, its data practices feel fairly standard and not alarmingly invasive.
